Bleeding brakes n clutch

Featured Replies

Im about to bleed the brakes on my 61 plate golf tdi , however ive seen a youtube vid that shows when bleeding the brakes you bleed the clutch at the same time as it uses the same hydroscopic fluid and the bleed nipple is of course near the clutch, now i have notices when i change gear (releasing the clutch pedal) i get a squeek from the left hand side of the engine bay, this only happens if im going up a steep hill or getting away quickly i.e changing gears quicker than usual ? Could this be a bleed of the clutch is possibly required?,this is a 61 plate and never had brakes or clutch bleeded

They use the same reservoir; that does not mean that both systems have trapped air in the slave cylinders or lines (although it seems likely if you're actually changing the fluid).

The squeek is more probably from a drying or dry pivot on the mechanical clutch or gear linkage.

Drying or dry pivot ? Im a mechanical neanderthal i need pictures

For example, where the gear cables (or links) attach to the gearbox

Any reason for thinking there's air in the system (spongy pedal, needing to pump the brakes), if not, they probably don't need bleeding.

But.... at 5 years old, it's probably time to think about having the fluid changed. To be fair, it's a job that a lot of garages aren't expensive on.

But i really dont trust garages and try to do it myself , my son is a mechanic so i can rope him in , pedals not spongy but the squwek is annoying i will get some good grease to lubricate pivots and bleed the system

When changing clutch fluid on my wifes Oct VRS I started doing it manually just by working the pedal up and down but this didn't work, lost the pedal so to speak. Used "easy bleed" kit and now done.

Which one did you get and was it a cuffufel getting to it ?

Gunsons East Bleed, slave cylinder was accessed by removing the air filter box.....I would think your Golf will be similar?

Personally, I don't get on well with the Eezi-bleed kits, I've used one a few times and found it a faf. I use a vacuum bleeder that runs on an air compressor (you can get pump up ones), and I find it utterly brilliant to use in comparison.

It's hyGroscopic. Means it absorbs water - one of the reasons it deteriorates and has to be changed.

I'm all for avoiding the easy bleed kits - truly misnamed. Always found two people do it best. So to speak.

If your son is a mechanic, he should be the ideal person to be asking and helping with all your questions ?

This is what I use

Connect it on the airline, take the cap off the master cylinder and fill it up. open the bleed nipple, push the tools plug on and pull the lever until you see clear liquid coming through. Only reason I get someone to help me is to save me getting up to keep the brake fluid topped up.

I remember one time bleeding a hydraulic clutch with the car on a 4-poster,  my mechanic mate under the car looking for the last of the air bubbles coming out, the car owner pumping the clutch, and me standing on one of the lift channels topping up the reservoir!

Hes always busy and hes only just qualified :)

Luckily VAG largely have the sense to put the bleed nipple on top.

Pump the clutch half a dozen times, hold it down, stick a hose on the nipple into a jamjar of fluid, and open the nipple. Pump it a few more times and done.

Well, we actually had the 4-poster, and the 3 people, so as long as I didn't step back, why not?

Too busy to help his Dad out? blood not that thick is the message here..sad but probably true.

Basic's in mechanics is fluid levels and how to maintain those levels, not rocket science even for your lad, to bleed brakes..

Being an olde type self taught mechanic, I've got a few tips. One is to fit self bleed nipples. This has a spring with a ball bearing inside. Slacken off and pump- fluid goes out, and on the return stroke the ball seals the valve. One other type is to fit a tube with a car valve to the bleed nipple. .Slacken off the nipple with the tube attached. Pump brakes and fluid + air goes out, and valve stops air returning. SIMPLES.

Probably true ? Wow thats reading a lot into a message , we are extremly close and doing it myself gives me some satisfaction rather than asking for someone else to do it all the time , i will do it myself and he will inspect after

First, I am to apologise for my unnecessary outburst concerning your son and yourself, over the problem with your car.

I will say to turn the tables around though, get your newly qualified son to do the job of which YOU will inspect, and if up to your standard..LOL

You must admit to bleed brakes is so much easier with two people, even if one person is just keeping an eye on the master cylinder fluid level, and the other is pumping the pedal..

No with the pressure bleeder its even easier than the 2 man method
