GPS Signal

Featured Replies

I have over the weekend bought a dash cam and got one with GPS, despite reading all the woe's about lack of signal through the heated screen and GPS devices not working. Well I would just like to report that the signal on my Nextbase 312gw was picked up in 20 seconds the first time it was turned on and has not dropped out yet. As a second note I still tend to use my Phone for Sat nav. the main reason being I am familiar with it and it has some of my destinations already in it. This phone is a Samsung S6 and again has no problem getting a signal and working as it should. My car is the 190 L&k estate and has the heated screen. Anyone who is worried about this PROBLEM be aware it is obviously not all cars.

Attached photo's show sat nav in the screen from passenger and drivers sides. In the passenger side photo you can see the satellite signal is working Bottom right of screen, a yellow Satellite.

Seen there is another thread elsewhere on this, might be worth contributing to that too.

Has it affected the dimming rear view mirror at all?

Not that I have notices Coops, As far as I'm a where the mirror dips internally, the shell does not move. The Dash cam is not in contact with the mirror anyway, there is about 1/4 inch between them.

OK, not sure how the dimming mirror works but there must be a sensor somewhere and thought perhaps the camera may block it.

Theres a little sensor window, less than 1cm, on the back of the mirror.

It seems it detects the light level and headlights etc to dim the rear view mirror to a suitable level.

Camera might be blocking that, but have a look.

How and where have you wired in?

I have had a look nothing is being obstructed, and there is a small 1cm square thing on the mirror, however as it is the lights from following cars that cause it to Dip I would have thought the sensor would be behind the glass mirror facing the rear, so if the car behind has full beam it would detect it and dip???

The dimming mirror has 2 sensors, the one that looks out towards the front of the car is for ambient light, this inhibits the mirror's operation during the day.

There is another sensor for measuring light coming from the vehicle behind you. On older mirrors it used to be a visible sensor at the bottom of the mirror frame, the later type must have the sensor hidden behind the mirror itself. Having the dashcam that close to the mirror's ambient sensor will make it think it's a bit darker than usual, so it will start to operate a littler earlier than usual. Not an issue IMO.

COOPS, At present it is not hard wired into the car, I have just used the lighter socket. However I have routed the cable from the device round the edge of the glass to the dash, then round to the door pillar and under/behind the glove box, it then pops out next to the transmission tunnel and into the lighter socket. In total there is about 8 " of wire showing 4" round the window pillar to door and 4" over the transmission tunnel to the lighter socket. I use the USB to power the phone and to be honest It looks quite neat, I may not bother hard wiring it in the end why spent £13 on a hard wire kit when it's not so bad just plugged in. The only Problem if you can call it that is that the lighter socket is always live, answer is easy unplug it or remove camera when parked problem solved, to be honest I would remove the camera if parked as I consider it a thief magnet just sat there un-guarded, don't fancy coming back to a smashed window.

A couple of more photo's showing how well you can hide the wire if you just use the provided cig lighter power socket. As said earlier about 8" of wire in total showing.
