I probably wouldn't be tempted to get someone with VCDS to have a go in case there's something else wrong with the installation. I would insist that PF Jones complete their contract, preferably using

^  why?

It could be argued that people driving kit / old cars could have more idea of how to deal with / control emergencies as there are no electronic systems to save them, also, the probable top speeds of these cars are far less than modern vehicles!

Kit cars have to pass strigent tests in order to gain a registration, tied in with MOT tests etc.

Just my views of course.

Why?

And thanks to all for the suggestions. I'm quite willing to pay to have the re-coding done correctly, especially as PFJ have refunded the fee, but if anyone does know somewhere/someone between here and Worthing that I can get the car and caravan into, we will be heading that way next weekend.

As for dealers doing the coding and in some cases having a lack of expertise the reason is that they rarely have to do it.

Most new Yetis either have a factory fit or it is subbed out by the dealer or the owner gets it done later themselves.

My preference was to have the dealer do it before I collected the car (bought from stock) but when they said they used a mobile fitting company I knocked that idea on the head. I had a Passat done by the VW dealer previously and they did a fine job.

I will be more patient and wait for the next car and get the factory fitted jobbie!

First the Lomax or any classic car is no worse than riding a motorbike or a cycle in a city ever ridden a bike in London !!! if you wish to use a 'risk factor assesment'.

its not an exuse to say that because a dealer fits towbars every 'Prteston Guild' (if you are unfamilier with that saying it is every 25 years) that they should not be fully trained and up to speed,

.

All of this is built into the price you pay for your car, there is no such thing as a free 3 year warrenty you pay for it in the new car price but they do not tell you, and as a customer you should expect nothing less than a dealer who has a full understanding of the vehicle you have bought.

THATS WHY YOU GO TO A DEALER AND PAY A PREMIUM It strikes me that some dealers are struggling with all the electronics on cars in some cases and the car manufacturer should make certain that technicians are fully trained to look after their product, otherwise customers will 'vote with their feet'

I don't think dealers really do the fit themselves but sub it out to a local contractor. At least it's there responsibility and your order is on them if it does go wrong.

Dealers are simply 'facilitators' from my perspective and the new technology must be a bit of a trial for the actual manufacturers and fitters.

The old days of welding up some simple tubing and angle iron are long gone now it seems.

I've watched the techs fitting one at my local dealer. No third party involved

Have you looked on the VCDS map (link in my signature) you will be passing lots of owners on the way to Worthing

What dealer was that?

Also in your Fuelly data at the top it shows US gallons! Is that something you change and is not the standard your MPG is worked out on?

Glad this thread popped up.

Just picked up a new car with a "dealer" fitted towbar from Westfalia. I asked if it had been coded to the vehicle having read this and I was told to ring the VW approved sub contractor, a local company.

I rang them and they were a bit abrupt but assured me that the Westfalia kit came with a proper connection kit and module and that it was fully integrated to the vehicles stability control system. Just hope that means it is all correct.

If it has the following changes when caravan or trailer coupled up it should be OK.

Tick list to check:

Dash display modified

Reversing sensors off

Rear fog off

Bulb failure extended

Alarm extended

May grab a friends trailer electric light board and hook it up to check :)

I was assured by the VW dealer, that it should be 100% as they were the local approved installer for their company and they are in no way connected so could well not be fully coded, not sure how the module works and if it is coded but they are a proper decent local trailer company.

Thanks for the info.

On the VCDS thing, I contacted my nearest advertised VCDSer and when I explained what I wanted (towbar module coding) he graciously declined, so I went to the dealer.

Just like the dealers... not all VCDS owners are experienced,

but TBH it’s not exactly difficult to code the towbar, there is enough info describing how to do it, some however only do scans and do not dabble in coding.

I think Graham had the same loom fitted as I have, just a 12(?)pin socket on the back, mine was a 7 pin, if the fitter left all the documentation with him there should be coding info in that document, certain its there in mine, anyone wanting copies pm me and I'll send out some electronic copies

I have the 13 pin Euro socket fitted.

I must check the documentation to see what it says about coding

If it's Westfalia kit it will just say 'Code' in the instructions. Not how or which bit.

I managed to get my local dealer to fit the standard Skoda Westfalia Kit to my yeti inc all the coding and even got the adaptor for the 7 to 13 pin (or it might be the other way around) for the same price as the smaller companies.

I would assume the adaptor is part of the kit as far as I was aware so shouldn't you have one with yours?

Sinclair Skoda in Swansea are fitting me in tomorrow afternoon, at very short notice, to re-code the car correctly.

They wanted to know who had made a mess of it, so name was passed on.

and a flashing sign in LLani?
