HD LCD TV - January sales the time to buy?

Featured Replies

My parents are looking at buying and LCD HD ready TV in the January sales.

However, given the price of these things tends to fall fairly steadily a few months afetr they're released, is it too early to consider buying one of these without paying through the nose?

They are looking at a 32" LG model they've seen in Currys for £999.

This is the one:

I was reading an article last week about HD ready. It would appear that all is not as it seems. They don't have to support all resolutions to be HD ready.

From the desk of a certified A/V guru i use.....

Wait.

LCD is still prone to ghosting, response times are still not up to cinema quality. The bigger you go, the more noticeable the lack of true black and artefacts are.

Not to mention that if the backlight goes, you're stuffed.....

2006 will see SED TV's. essentially seems to be crt, but from the side and scanning technology. Contrast ratio's about 20,000:1.....eeeek!

get a decent crt for now if a new tv is really needed, and wait is what i'd do.

As above, wait.

January sales are for clearing out old stock ;)

Prices will fall more in a few months.

Depends if they must have a freeview digibox built into it. I believe this is the exact same tv, but doesnt have a digital tuner built in. If your hooking it up to sky or ntl digital you wont need one and can save yourself a couple of hundred

LCD's hooked up to NTL or Sky have truly awful picture quality i'm told. A friend of mine works in an electrical retailers and they get regular complaints about the picture quality customers get with Cable TV, SKY or from built-in analogue tuners on their LCD screens. LCD's just don't do well on analogue signals he reckons. The sets with Freeview are great because they retain the digital signal throughout.

Thats ok unless you like watching skysports etc... you cant get one with ntl box built in. I have seen picture quality from an lcd running ntl digital and sky digital and the picture is very good.

Right thought I would ressurrect this thread as I have just been out and bought a 32" lcd TV.

I am very impressed with it. I have plugged my ntl box into it and must say that the picture is much better then my crt. So all those people saying the picture wont be as good were wrong. Its so sharp especially for any writing thats on screen. It was well worth getting.

I havent run an analogue aerial through it and wont be doing it as there is no point when I have ntl digital. my 10 metre dvi lead is in the post so havent had a chance to hook the pc up, but that should provide me with some hi def loving at some point.

The Tv I bought was the LG 32lx2r and it's got all the ports I needed on the back. the only thing it doesnt have is a digital tuner built in. I wasnt fussed about this and felt it wasnt worth paying another £200 odd just to have one.

All in all I am very pleased with this tv and would recommend anyone looking for an lcd tv should definitely look at the LG range. They are simply stunning and good value compared to the sony's of this world.

Sounds nice and interesting point on the picture quality. Out of interest, did your old CRT TV have an RGB enabled scart and did you use it for NTL. Most CRT's only have one RGB enabled scart input and most people use that for a DVD Player whereas your new tv will have at least 2 rgb enabled inputs. I've found the picture quailty from my Sky+ box to be much better than my NTL digital box and I run the two along side each other so it's easy to compare. It would be interesting to see how this model would perform on Sky.

There must be lots of us in this position now... I'm thinking £300 on a "give-away" pure flat screen CRT for now and then what I can spend the remaining £500-£700 on :D and review once HD actually arrives and see what prices do...

I think there is a strict rule and parameters about what can be called HD Ready (i.e. ratio, pixels etc) and that some are not quite as ready as they purport to be... Hmmm.

Not seen many LCD's with anything built-in TBH. Agree that LG and Sharps seem to have better pictures IMO.

That's my contribution

I used to run the ntl box through the rgb port on my tv, but the picture was no better through it then a standard scart socket. As I have a few games consoles and they look better on rgb I plug them into the rgb scart instead. I also tried setting the ntl box to rgb output and it made no real difference on the crt.

Had the opportunity to plug swmbo's pc into the tv today and all I can says is WOW!!!!!

got some hi def demos down too and its simply stunning.

Bought a 32" LCD a few months ago, watching old programmes ie repeats, from 1980's then picture quality is poor with some shadowing / ghosting. On modern transmissions sports etc picture is brilliant, If using a dvd recorder u need to use highest resolution or picture quality degridation is more visible. (All the above comments refer to |Sky digital broadcasts). The set I bought was the cheapest on the market at £600 from Woollies, believe now down to around £500 at argos. Not HD. Two reasons- only certain Sky programmes will be broadcast HD and at extra cost new digi box subs etc. - Also quoted £100 for an HD lead to connect Free HD dvd player available in deal ( other shop £100 dearer but free cable) so decided to get LCD but wait till HD 'rolled out' accross all channels plus will come down in price. V. happy with LCD Hope this helps

Its strange that the picture didnt improve when you tried the RGB Scart with the NTL box set to RGB too. I've helped loads of mates and family out with their new CRT tvs and RGB always much superior results especially with NTL as the picture isn't quite as sharp as that with Sky. Your old CRT tv and Ntl box obviously were not playing ball with each other. It's no wonder you have noticed such an improvement.

I love the idea of hooking up a pc though. I think that's a great reason to buy one of these tv's in itself.

If i pushed the boat out I could stretch to a DLP rear projection TV as the quality is stunning but i'm very wary about the difference in HD resolutions and am not prepared to pay Sky the extra money for a HD set top box and subscription. I'll stick with my CRT widescreen and Sky+ box until the dust settles and prices come down a bit more.
