That sucking sound traced.

Featured Replies

Hi to All

You may remember a thread about a sucking in kind of sound under hard acceleration on the vRS recently. Well I checked visually under the bonnet for any hoses off in the inlet path and found nothing. However, while in for service today (Preston Garage in Writtle, Essex. See my review of their service) the technician spotted that although it looked like it was on, the hose from airbox to turbo was just resting up against the end of the airbox outlet stub. This must have been off since the car was new.

The hose correctly fitted, the sucking sound is now gone and the car subjectively pulls stronger and revs out better. I suspect that as the pipe was off, there was a little less air passing the MAF sensor, leading to mild underfuelling.

Sorted:thumbup:

Does anybody know if this is likely to have caused any damage to the turbo impeller or catalytic converter?

Chris

There would have been a greater chance for grit and dust to get through the turbo and into the engine's cylinders.

I wouldn't worry too much.

You don't have any mods listed, and if this is the case, then surely any damage would be covered under warranty?

Hopefully there wouldn't have been, though.

any chance of a pic to locate problem as my car does the same...?

cheers

Mine was the same when i bought it used - i looked under the bonnet when i got the car home to see where everything was and i spotted it (don't know how Horners missed it when they did the supposed full service?)

It was a tight fit with the origional hose clip so i replaced it with a jubilee clip :)

Cannot be bothered with a picture, however, when you open the bonnet, you will see the airbox near the back of the engine bay ( the black plastic box just behind the battery) on your right. There is a large diameter corrugated hose that exits this, runs across the back of the engine bay and goes behind the engine cover. You cant miss it, it is the biggest tube under the bonnet. The hose was off where it joined the airbox. Interestingly, because of the way the hose rested against the airbox, it looked like it was fully on. Make sure you give it a wiggle to check it.

Are you talking about the turbo whistly sound? Mines done it from new, and so did the car I test drove. I assumed its normal?

No, this was the sound of air being drawn across an edge, a bit like blowing across an upturned bottle top.
