Hi everyone

I could really do with some help I've been to 2 different garages and I'm still getting nowhere but spending to much money!!

I fitted a recon gearbox and single mass flywheel convertion to my 1.8T Octavia because the layshaft came out the side of my gearbox. I got it all fitted an wasn't to happy with the gearbox it sounded really bad so I got it taken out an sent to a different gearbox specialist who changed the shimes and bearings.

The clutch had only been in for 3 days after we took the gearbox back off but the flywheel was blue I've now got a very bad vibrations through all the gears except reverse I'm guessing it's the flywheel but I'm reluctant to spend any more money as its only a week old!!! The car wasn't driven hard so how could it go blue? Has anyone had the same problem? And is it possible for a flywheel to warp?? Is there anything I can do to test it without taking the gearbox off?

Thanks for your reply it's had no abuse at all it's only done about 40 miles but it's gone a bit blue which doesn't make sense because it hasn't been driven hard.

What are the symptoms of a warped flywheel? It vibrates really bad in all gears except reverse?

Flywheels can certainly warp, but it takes a fair bit of abuse to do it.

I think you have almost answered your own question - take it back to who did the gearbox recon, sounds like something isn't correct with the bearings/preload in the box to me. As for the blue flywheel, that would usually be down to clutch slip, but to warp it would take some serious abuse.

Yeah the company I got the clutch off has said there is no was your could warp there flywheel and the bit of blue is normal I've checked drive shafts exhaust the gearbox was sent to another company who have said its all fine.

I'm running out of ideas I'm tempted to put the dual mass back and see what happens but it's a lot more money for it not to cure my problem

Yeah I used the G60 flywheel and VR6 clutch kit from darkside no the slave cylinder wasn't changed did it need to be?

Thanks

I would have changed it personally while the box was off.

Only things I can think of are the slave cylinder might be different for the G60/VR6 kit or the clutch plate is installed the wrong way round.

Hope you can get it sorted pal.

It's only two bolts and a bleed should you want to change it after, pretty easy. I don't change them as a rule, if it works it's fine.

Have you checked the oil level? May be worth draining an refilling the box. Drain it out into a clean container, through a coffee filter paper, or some muslin cloth, and see what comes out. Any signs of metallic sheen or small bits of metal, and something isn't right internally.

Personally, I don't think it's the clutch, if it's changing gear fine, then that side would be ok. I still reckon transmission issue, are all the mounts ok?

So you say your issue is bad vibrations? I think you need to find a member in your area and get a second opinion.

For me, vibration is down to bushes, dogbone mount not being attached or loose bolts.

I have the dark side kit and am running 280bhp/torque, track days included. All fine, which makes me think your SMF and clutch are fine.

But yeah, you are coming from a DMF with an OEM box and you are now running SMF with recon box; that does change NVH levels.

And the clutch kit will bed in and smooth out.

:) keep an eye on your mpg as that will tell you if there is excessive friction. Things like brake distance too. Get another vrs owner to drive your car, drive an SMF equipped car...:)

On a side note, how did you manage to pierce an OEM box? What torque did you put through that box?

It was down to a mechanic not putting enough oil in the gearbox the bearings over heated an come out the side NOT HAPPY £2500 later and it's still not fixed

I've noticed the exhaust is causing the problem it's hitting the steering rack so I went and got 2 brand new engine mounts vibratech ones and no change it never hit the steering rack before so what else could be causing it?? The dogbone it's going down at an angel and when I undo it the exhaust moves away from the steering rack.

Why could this be? I've turn the dog mount round an it's even worse. I'm out of ideas and don't wanna spend any more money until someone can tell me 100% what is wrong. I was told engine spacers but why should it need spacing if it never hit in the first place??

Please help

:wall:  :punch: :wtf:

I see you're in the same area as me (the mobile version of the site never showed me that)

Pm me with your address and whereabouts, see if i can drop by.

Don't drive the car for the time being I'd say.  Do you get chatter when in neutral?

we can work this out.  wish I still had my spare gearbox though, but they can be had for cheap
