Guide to replacing Head Unit with aftermarket one?

Featured Replies

I have an 05 TDI Octavia at the moment and it has the head unit that unfortunately doesn't have aux/bluetooth.

I've tried searching this but its awfully confusing. I'm basically asking for the cheapest way I can replace the head unit with an aftermarket double DIN piece.

It doesn't have to be touch screen, doesn't have to display the climate control on it, I'd even be willing to sacrifice the parking sensor (but if I could keep it it would obviously be preferable).

Can anyone tell.me for example if I purchased a double DIN head unit from halfords for about €120 will it fit straight in? Or is there a guide on exactly what I need to buy/do for different head units?

Thanks a million!

If you replace with an aftermarket stereo unless it specifically has the features of mirroring the parking sensor display etc then you are going to loose that.

Also you may need either a CAN adapter or to get a switched live from the fuse box otherwise the stereo won't turn off/on properly.

If you get a standard double DIN unit you will also need a faceplate adapter.

If aux input would be sufficient addition, wouldn't be better (cheaper) just to add that. You would have to replace the unit with Stream mp3 one (£40 off ebay) and run a cable to where you want it. No other cost involved and parking sensors will continue to show up on the screen.

If you want a bluetooth, Bolero unit would work great but some other things are needed - newer version of canbus, bluetooth module and harness - at least £200 all together.
