Hi all,

 

I have read many posts about this but my BKD sounds like a police siren which I have had diagnosed as the turbo. Performance is still strong. Some black smoke at high revs.

I have recently had a bespoke remapp which im guessing created additional pressure that affected the turbo.

Can I drive it for the next week until I get it sorted?

 

Also, I am sending to a turbo specialist who has recommended that we look into the issue with the turbo before we replace the whole thing. It may only be some components that need replacement (saving£££) and we discussed a slightly increased compressor wheel to help performance.

Will that need another remapp? or is an increased compressor wheel ill advised as it may cause more issues?

 

Several questions but needing advice.

New tandem pump, new EGR, new cam belt, new glow plugs all done.

 

Any input would be appreciated.

Your right with it being the turbo the symptoms you describe are common for all forms of turbo

Try not to screw it as you may just let go without warning it's exactly what happened to my old diesel car when I was getting it live tested for a remap, suddenly went from the siren to a big pop, no performance and oil everywhere and a horrific sound that not even the Devils mechanics could tolerate.

When I replaced my turbo is was the core that had failed, completely lose from its holding

Just try and chug it round for a bit and stay away from boost

Its rotating out of balance, thats the cause of the noise. Usually terminal in short order, especially if you push the envelope. It will be stressing out the bearing, and if that goes, engine oil could be pumped straight into the intake side and expect a spectacular end to your engine unless you can somehow stall a full power runaway engine in a matter of a couple of seconds (unlikely)

If you want to save ££££ don't drive it until it is fixed. If bits of your turbo are eaten by your engine it will be a whole lot more than a turbo you will need (I know this is next to impossible but you get the general drift)

My bkd engine turbo has been using the police siren for over 100,000 mls and hasn't worsened yet. Probably blow up tomorrow now I've said that lol

As above, a whistling turbo is not always a sign of impending doom.

 

Some turbo's are naturally nosier than others. A slight whistle or low volume siren is nothing to worry about.

 

If it is very audible or the police car is only a couple of cars behind you then things are quickly coming to a head.

 

Assuming the remap you've had is performance related then it shouldn't come as a surprise that all related components are now under increased stress, so if the turbo was already worn you may now have accelerated that wear to a much faster rate.

 

When mapping an older / high mileage car it is always sensible to budget for a new or uprated turbo and clutch too.

I'm in a similar boat - two years with a police-siren turbo. I do mostly long distance driving but I really do worry about it when I'm nipping around in short bursts. Think I should replace now? I'm planning on getting rid of the car in 18 months though.
