How much AR6400-D to cure sticky vanes?

Featured Replies

Hi all,

My 2005 2L Octavia DSG had the sticky vanes issue (overboost at 3000rpm, limp mode, etc), so I've bought a 430ml bottle of AR6400-D to fix it.

Thing is, I've got no idea how much to chuck in the tank, or how much diesel to put on top of it.

Can anyone advise?

Thanks!

Just add the full bottle when next filling up and top up the with full tank of fuel for best result

Nice one - thanks! Are you definitely not meant to have more AR6400 in relation to fuel amount in order to fix this particular problem, though?

This might work well as an injector cleaner but I doubt it helps cure sticky vanes. You'd be better off with Mr Muscle route.

Yeah, gonna try that if this doesn't work. The manufacturer have fixing sticky vanes as one of its selling points, though, and I've read other people saying it works, so fingers crossed!

one bottle treats 43 to 86 litres so if you want to be precise you can just add 43litres of fuel when the tank is nearly empty but last time I treated my car I just added the full bottle and topped up the tank to full which is about 50 litres.

these are the instructions for AR6600 Turbo cleaner but I never used it before so I can't comment

With the engine up to operating temperature add one full bottle to 15-25 litres of fuel.  If carbon build-up is severe then add two bottles to 30-50 litres of fuel.  Drive moderately, varying the engine speed but do not exceed 3500 rpm.  Continue this until the fuel is consumed. Use every 5,000 - 10,000 miles or as required -

Aye, understood, but should I not bung less diesel in so that the additive has more effect, since I'm specifically trying to fix sticky vanes rather than prevent them becoming sticky in the first place, if you see what I mean?

Give them a really good blast of the stuff, as it were.

A-ha! Nice work - that's the answer I was looking for. :-D

Thanks!

There may be some joy before it fully cokes up but my suspicion is once there is any significant build up these cleaners are unlikely to have much impact. Mr muscle worked for me 3 times over 30k miles but then I even gave up on that and had the turbo re done (as the engine was being stripped for a new timing belt anyway).

You can get reconditioned genuine Garrett turbos for 200 quid these days on exchange so it's not the frightening cost it was.

Cleaners are *******s.

I wonder how you get overboost at 3000rpm??? Turbo vanes are designed to remain open in case of failure. If you have overboost, they don't move at all and you kill your engine in no time. It must be like dragster now.

I wonder how you clean something by burning it first in engine and then hope it will clean turbo.

Take your car for spin...best solution would be mountains where you can reach 100% load at WOT for long periods of time. Then you get around 800deg C in exhaust and maybe you burn all rubbish out of turbo. But it may work for small deposits.

Best solution is to take turbo off, use petrol and fire. But it rarely works reliably. Soon or later you're where you are now...most likely due low-revs-saving-fuel driving. What you describe looks like severe build up of deposits in turbo, ready for a new turbo

Just thought I'd report back on the result. :)

Bunged a full bottle of AR6400 and 15l of diesel in, ragged it up and down the M4 until empty and so far the problem has been completely resolved! No more limp mode at 3000rpm!

Dunno how long it'll last, but I'll post back if the problem comes back.

Cheers!

Next time it happens, try the ragging it up and down the motorway without the additive, it'll probably do exactly the same job.

Tried that several times already.

Archoil AR6400-d won't have any effect on the turbo vanes I've been using it along with BG244 for years with great results. Italian tune up is the best method of preventing build up otherwise it's a clean.

AR6400-d and BG244 need to be allowed to dissolve any build up in the fuel system so you need add to empty tank full up and drive around like Miss Daisy. When you get to 1/4 tank fill up and drive normally.
