Help with a new fault if you'd be so kind :)

Featured Replies

Good evening chums,

Out in the Vrs earlier, running fine.

Came to a slip road to join a motorway, booted it down in second gear as I love to do :) and I had a very momentary loss of drive - really quick, very sudden - electrical type rather than fuel-related type, if you know what I mean, due to it's sudden-ness. If sudden-ness is a word..?!

Kinda like if I'd flicked the ignition switch off and on in a tenth of a second.

Anyway, following that, it was fine again, pulled as strongly as before. No misfire, no loss of power. Behaving perfectly except....I now have the check engine and traction control lamps permanently lit. Several ignition cycles and driving periods have not cleared the lights. I usually get these lights on with a coil-pack failure, but this time coil packs are fine - there's no misfire at all. I initially wondered if it was an ABS wheel sensor, but I did a couple of emergency stops and the ABS is working perfectly. Pressing the traction control button on the dashboard has no effect on the light, it stays on.

I'm learning towards MAF, but I really have no idea. I know that the first port of call is a scan, which I will do tomorrow, but I was wondering what the Brisky collective was thinking?

Thanks as always chaps.

Looking at what you have already checked, I would say you're thinking is leaning in the right direction, but the scan will reveal the most info.

Have you tried running with the MAF disconnected?, does it still do it?, or has the initial fault not returned, just the light?.

Thanks matey. And as you say, scan for the win. Just wondering out loud tonight before I arrange a scan asap.

No, haven't tried running with MAF disconnected, but then again, the car's running perfectly - exactly as it should, which is odd because I would imagine if it was a MAF fault, it wouldn't run so well.

So yes, the initial fault was just that one time, I haven't managed to get it to do it again, but the lights remain on.

another vote for a scan to diagnose here; you've already stated it seemed electrical so hopefully it'll up-chuck a code for you to work back from.

Shall we open betting on what the fault code will be?

Here's my starter:

17743 - Engine Torque Monitor 2

P1335 - 35-10 - Control Limit Exceeded

I had this throw up when asked the engine for a bit of welly although in my case it went into limp mode but was fine after restarting...

My money is on a crank sensor

Ooh well......the 'thick plottens...' I'm getting a wee bit scared now at some of these suggestions.....I was hoping for a simple MAF swap-out or something. I hope it doesn't turn into a monster....

I'll post back with an update as soon as I know...

Tcl often comes on associated with maf...wouldn't be the brake pedal switch playing silly games would it?

Haha thanks mate...back of the net, as they say.

I do worry a bit these days now, as mine's 15 years old with 160k on the clock....I guess that if anything REALLY major happened now, it would be a wee bit of a dilemma about whether to spend possibly the equivalent of what the car is worth on repairs :D or if it would be time to say goodbye!

Then again, as there's so few on the road now....I also feel a bit of a weight of responsibility to keep her going! Interestingly lately I'm getting more and more people coming over to chat in car parks and petrol stations and that....they normally say 'oh the police started using these, I remember when they were patrolling motorways.....I never see any now, good to see yours....'

Its all good mate, wish I could have kept mine going. If that MAF is the only real problem you've had lately you're doing ok, as you know they can play up at any age/time. Just keep going for as long as you feasibly can, the car might surprise you yet (in a good way).

I hope so mate. I'm aiming for 200k at the minimum....determined to get there!
