All this big talk of fast Fabias... What About Octavias?

Featured Replies

Elsewhere on the site Fabia vRS owners are making all kinds of outlandish claims about them....

Here are a few musings regarding the Octavia:

It's difficult to use 'feel' to gauge true performance, but I've been very pleased by the performance of my -presumably standard-, Octavia vRS. I've deliberately not caned it in first in the dry, but In 2nd and 3rd gears it's better than I'd expected. I was especially surprised by the Saab Aero straight line comparison.

ie. giving away 70bhp didn't equate to that much in real terms.

Do the cars usually put out a genunine (or less? or more?) 180bhp on Super Unleaded/Optimax with a K&N Panel?

I'm going to have to take it to a rolling road to satisfy my curiosity at some point soon!

Assuming it is standard, re-mapping is tempting, but I'm not sure the benefit would be worth the cost and insurance rise. As a near comparison, Is a Leon Cupra R much different performance wise to a Leon Cupra or is it marginal?

A Civic Type R is, on paper, a fair bit faster than the Octavia vRS, but once on the move, in real world use, when you're not constantly doing 8000rpm and shifting gears, are they significantly more rapid?

I do know someone with a 225 TT, but he hasn't found 2000rpm yet, so there'll be no car park drag racing going on there...

I overtook a civic type r easily once.......he had three passengers and luggage all over the inside of the car though.:D

He wasn't "not trying to keep up", but then again he wasn't "trying to keep up" either.

i've been shot down many times for making oulandish claims like being faster than a fabia. tsk!!

I've owned both, 03 octy vrs and my currant 04 fabia vrs. I find that in everyday driving, when you're not pushing it too much, the fabia feels faster, i assume this is the 50ft/lbs difference, ultimately though, the octy is certainly faster.

Not too sure about a re-mapped fab v standard octy.

One thing though, the fab is much cheaper to run, ie insurance nearly half as much plus i average 45 ish mpg as opposed to 28 ish in the octy.

I must say i loved/love both cars.

cheers

Jonno.

That's about the level of it :)

So, without getting too 'boy racer', does anybody have any answers or ideas about my questions?

re: Fabias. I'm sure they're great, but as someone who drives fairly long distances, carries other people and bulky items, I've never considered buying a little car like that.

I wasn't actually comparing a Fabia with an Octavia -It apples with oranges.

I'm sure at some point I'll buy a turbodiesel, but for now I'm enjoying the broad powerband and relative stealth of the Octavia.

A standard car will put out pretty much exactly what Skaoda designed it to do. The K&N panel will produce very slight increases in torque.

Depends on how old the Cupra is - the difference between the original Cupra and the R version is quite dramatic!

Compared to a standard Octavia, the Civic would be faster on a B road sprint that involved corners. In a straight line I reckon the Civic would "have" a standard VRS

Cheers.

I'd considered a Type R, but they were just too small and the Octavia seemed the better all-round package -I'm happy with my choice, but would a 20-30bhp increase from a basic re-map change the character of the car significantly (in a positive way)?

any "modded" octavias care to sign up to anglesey then?.. settle it? :D

A mere standard Octavia can whoop a modded Fabia in all circumstances, it has been alleged many many times, so come on you Octy fellas, like Col says, settle it at Anglesey Circuit - 22nd Jan 2006, via book a track dot com.

I'll go if someone else pays the fee and accomodation for me ;)

Thats like me saying i'll come to your runway if you pay the fuel and hotel. Cheeky man :D

Mine will be there, if I have a new clutch by then, it might run...;)

Anyhow although the track is a leveling ground there is still the case of driver...

Paul is almost as quick round that circuit in an old mini than I will be in a 325...60secs I think for a lap in his mini 50 for his octavia.

So regardless of what people think, you need a few more constants before you can "settle" anything.

And now back to the parent topic...it's amazing how nippy lupo gti's, elises, clio 172's are around Wales, lovely in fact to follow, but never escape from my days of owning a 210 4x4. Mind you thats on real roads and nobody hanging about, we were all within a few car lengths of each other all day long.

Even in a standard form (180) you would be surprised on real roads with real traffic, how accomplished all cars can be...which is why the punto was never long behind, but was dropped a few times along with mr2's etc...then again not everybody speeds up when they see suregrip on the corner.

Why don't you go halves, 100 quid each inc accom...fuel is three tanks at the absoulte most.

Not saying you have to, but you could or think about it for the next few ;)

All should come to anglesey.... is a great track....

Fabias shoulbe be lapping in about 57-58 seconds on a flyer.

The old cooper did it in 60 dead with a sick motor...

The baron did a 50.5 but tbh 52 was more realistic even im not sure how i did the 50.5

Most tuned scoobs on road tyres run 54's on a dry warm day... but watch out for the metro's ........

It would be nice to see a quick Octavia, not many around up north.

A trackday in May would be fine, then I could come down and watch you boys play, too far for me to drive in track mode.

I know you said quick Octys so that counts me out, but I'll be there with the Pikey 1 special edition. :o
