Poor radio reception caused by LED DRL bulbs!

Featured Replies

I've been suffering with poor radio reception in my Estate. I'd barely been able to get any radio stations and those I could get were full of static interference. I however noticed that it was fine when I had the radio on but key not in the ignition. So I went round debugging what I'd changed and it turns out it was the LED bulbs I'd put in the DRLs!

I had bought a set of these: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B016KL6YSE/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Gone back to standard bulbs for the moment and all is fine with the world again...

I wonder is there some sort of current controller/switch mode transformer inside it. It the modules had LEDs only in them there should be nothing to create interference. The non-polarity comment in the description does at least suggest that there's circuitry to deliver voltage to the right end of the LED regardless of which way it's sent through the connections to the car.

Most LEDs should have a driver circuit to correctly limit the current. Cheaper drivers can produce excess electronic noise and cause interference. Some super cheap versions will just have a resistor but it'll often be underrated and fail.

Given the price paid, I'd be a little disappointed in them...

Get onto the supplier to see if there is a fix

I've returned them for a refund and ordered some different ones!

I had exactly this issue with some LEDs. Ditched them and went back to standard. CBA with looking for an alternative.

Buy a quality LED and it should be fine. I use this: http://www.morimotohid.com/led-lighting/morimoto-xb-led-1156-bulbs.html

Both Philips and Osram also do a P21W LED replacements and I'd be surprised if either caused interference.

I have a similar issue with my door lights with Skoda logo projector (the ones from this add). Opening a door caused the DAB-reception to drop out. It took me a while to trace the problem, but this thread pointed me in the right direction. Replacing the LED door lights by the originals solved my problem.
