Weird brake issue

Featured Replies

Evening all.

My 1.0 Fabia has been stressing me out for the last 2000 odd miles, and it feels like it's getting worse. When braking gently the whole cars feels like it's shuddering, or almost like the abs is kicking in. No body else really notices it, and when there is a passenger in the car it's much less obvious. The other half has likened it to driving in too high of a gear.

Local dealer looked at it and declared no fault found, despite there being less than half a mile added to the milage...not exactly a great road test.

Has anybody got any insight or words of advise? Now I notice it I can really feel it every time. It doesn't help that the drive is very jittery at the best of times.

Maybe its a warped brake disk.

I had the same problem on a nearly new BMW motorcycle.  It was easy to pinpoint on the bike by feeling a pulsing through the brake pedal. It maybe harder to diagnose with four wheels though.

My bike problem was put down to faulty manufacture of the disk and it was replaced under warrant.

Hope you get to the bottom of it...

The 1.0 has drums rear, right?

Besides a warped or possibly uneven surfaced front disc I would give brakepad dust inside the drums a shot.

Have you checked tyre pressures and set them to suit?

Can you get a trusted family member or friend with mechanical knowledge to drive the car and give an opinion?

Strange how problems always seem to disappear at the local dealers, only to return as soon as we get off their property?.

If you are anywhere near North Dorset then bring it in to me for a free diagnoses.

Thanks AG Falco

You honestly wouldn't belive how many customers can't replicate a commonly occurring fault during a road test. I think they get nervous and drive differently than normal.

In this case we get them to pop back in without turning the engine off and got back out with them.

I had the pressures set to the Eco setting, but will be changing them to comfort and see if that makes a change. I had my dad take it for a drive, but he is convinced the car is just a jittery drive in general!

It does indeed. The dealer told me that the disks were fine, however didn't mention the drums, so when I get the car back to them I will ask to see if there is a buildup, many thanks.

Dust build up would be for a car with 70k miles plus.

Go to any MOT station, where they can test each wheel/brake individually.

If there is a problem with the brakes it will show up.

You are welcome to come to me in North Dorset.
