Cracked Windscreen

Featured Replies

Hi

Anyone suffered with a cracked windscreen on the Octy II. Car was left in a car park at a retail shopping park this morning for about 20mins and when I returned there was a crack going from the top of the screen , approx 5inches to the left of centre staight down for 7-8 inches then right for 4-5 inches.

Is this a stress fracture? Should it be covered by warranty or should I claim on my insurance?

I just had a replacement from autoglass on the insurance, I had a stonechip, small crack a couple of months ago in the bottom left hand corner. With the cold weather it cracked to about 10 inches so claimed on the insurance £50 quid excess!

One thing I noticed the new windsrceen has made the cabin a bit quieter, less noise and some vibrations have disappeared!!

I had this happen to me on my Mk1 Octy a few months ago, 12 inch crack from halfway down the A piller towards the centre of the windscreen and no sign of any impact mark.

Mine was fixed under warrenty, if there is no sign of a stone impact go to your local dealer and get the warrenty guy to take a look at it.

I'd try the warrenty route, assuming it's still covered. I had the windscreen replaced on my audi by autoglass under the insurance, then again, and again, and it still doesn't fit, and they've damaged someting every time. Fortunately someone drive into the back of it last month so it's away having that fixed, meanwhile i'm fighting a losing battle to get it sent to Audi for a proper windscreen.

If you get the choice, don't got for the mobile fitters, they're the 2@s that nobody wants in hte workshop.

I had a stone chip on my windscreen filled (he had come to replace the screen, but found that it could be filled instead) by a punctual, polite and informative mobile fitter about a year ago.

I repair windscreens (note repair I dont replace) for a living and in the last 3 years I can say that I have only seen 'stress fractures' on large coach screens. what has prob happened is a stone has hit the screen in the black area and the crack has run to the end of the glass. the extremes we get in temp this time of year with cold air and warmed glass from the heater tends to set the cracks running. I bet I could find a tiny mark that looks like a slither of glass has come away where it cracked, that will have been the point of impact.

Oh and everybody in the west yorks area please dont use your insurance to get stone chips repaired, as I'm fed up with the cowboy repairs from the insurance approved windscreen REPLACEMENT companys. If you want to stop a water leak you wouldnt call a joiner would you??

PS I am not saying this to tout for business as I have my hands full just about all year round and I do 97% of my business with the motor trade direct. However around 20% of calls I receive are wasted journeys owing to lousy repairs and glass aint like paint, you can't rub it down and start again!

You have been noted for future use

Shame you're oop in Yorkshire!

Dude, you'll probably find that most dealers subcontract screen/glass work as it takes their technicians several hours to remove and refit. As the techs don't do too many, they are not as practised as your Autoglass dude who does it day-in-day out. They usually subcontract repair which enables the workshop controller to better use his technician.

So just because, it goes back to Audi doesn't mean it will be as good a repair as say Autoglass as the Audi technicians are probably not as adept.

Skoda warrenty does not cover glass,:thumbdwn: I found this out the other week when the heated door mirror suddenly cracked after being switched on to clear some ice. My dealer was sorry after making a call to Skoda warrenty, so gave me a discount on the mirror glass and f.o.c fitting:thumbup:
