Roof window rattle

Featured Replies

Hello my fellow skoda owners.

I have experienced rattle while having roof window open for ventilation. After detailed inspection I have found out, that right side of the supporting structure of the windows is "jumping" on the right window rail/slider. Left side is rock solid.

Video for more detailed explanation.

Do you have any experience with this ? I am afraid that in oder to fix this I would need to put down the roof lining from interior :(

Hello everyone.

If you experience rattle in your sunroof, it is high chance that source of this rattle would be the back difusor of sunroof. (Vertical movement displayed in video)

I have searched quite a lot and found this following guide: A4 sunroof, nevertheless same principle applies also to my Superb 2.

In order to fix it, you need two hands, ideally one more person to help you put out the sunroof, T25 screwdriver, pry tool.

on scale from 1 to 10, 10 being extra hard to do , this is 1.

Step 1: Remove the sunroof shade.

Quite easy to do. Open your sunroof by 1/3.  Take you pry tool ( I have used old credit card :D ) and insert it to the middle of shade. You can even pull it gently downwards.

Notice: be careful if you have filthy hands !! If you are not very careful you can put dirt on our interior lining around the shade.

Most of the you would have a see-thru glass. Mine is actually solar powercells - Independent ventilation energy source.

Step 1.5: Check from outside how much is sunroof glass sticking out of the car body (The information is needed to align the glass at the end of the process)

Step 2: Roll the shade backwards, Open Sunroof to ventilation position. [We keep it in Ventilation position during the whole process]

Step 3: Now you are going to unscrew 3 screws holding the sunroof. (3 per side, 6 screws in total). These screws holds the glass on the rail frame. Also they are used as "height" adjustment of the glass. Therefore when reassembling you will need to play a little with the height to get it right. Use T25 torx screwdriver. Unfortunately I did not took a picture for this :(. Just look for T25 screws.

Step 4: Remove the glass and store it somewhere safe. Store the screws.

Step 5: Locate the rear difusor rail. it will be either before or behind the difusor.
Mine was behind, however with a long screwdriver I was able to pull it back to me.

Step 6: You need to position the difusor back into the rail housing.
There is small clip with no physical "safety" switch. It just needs to be aligned properly. I would recommend to disconnect the difusor from sunroof frame. It is connected only by pick which starts as narrow one and grows outwards. With help of pry tool you can get it separated.

Step 7: While we are at it, give the rails a little lube :) . Mine were 6 years old and lube look like someone jerked on it 6 years ago. All stiff.

Step 8: Connect the difusor back with Sunroof frame.

Step 9: [Highly optional] Check functionality.

!!!! Be careful !!!! Without the glass on the frame, it tends to jump out from desired rail path. That would cause the sunroof to fully open. - Protection against sticking fingers while closing :) . Also In the front of the rail, there are white lubed "covers" for leading pieces of frame that holds it in the rail. They tend to come out. So just align them back again.

Step 10: Revert the process.

After fitting the glass, align the height to the original position.

Since them I am running rattle-free.
