Thought the same when I got mine. They do work, you just have to switch them to intermittent (INT) on the stalk. They are then automatic and their frequency is controlled by the switch on top of the stalk (I bar to IIII bars)

Have you got the wiper stalk in the intermittent position? (and is it raining?!)

aren't auto wipers and intermittent wipers 2 different things?

in my golf there's no frequency selector for the auto wipers, the speed is automatic depending on how heavy the rain is, you just place the stalk into the 'auto' position

On the octavia, if you have auto wipers, they take the place of intermittent setting and must be set to int for it to work, and the intermittent frequency selection then sets the frequency of the auto sweep.

I leave mine in the middle speed intermittent position, they decide themselves whether it's wet enough to wake up, to go like the clappers in a downpour, then ease up when the rain stops.

The Octavia (and I'd imagine your Golf too) allows you to disable (via the infotainment) the automatic function giving you just a variable speed intermittent wipe instead. When the auto feature is enabled, the speed setting changes to adjust the sensitivity instead. The wiper stalk must be the the intermittent position for the auto wipers to active however.

All of the above is correct apart from the switch on top setting the frequency of the wipers. Whilst I can understand why some people would think this, it actually affects the sensitivity of the rain sensor (which in turn means they work faster in lighter rain).

+1

Setting the auto wipers also gives a single rear wipe when selecting reverse gear

Unless you've deactivated that, which I have.

Hi,

I picked my Vrs up on Thursday and thought the auto wipers weren't working too, I was going to ring the sales person but she rang me to see how i was going on with the car, She told me much of what is written above but mentioned that in position 1, What I thought was intermittant, she also told me the adjuster on the top of the stalk is to alter the sensitivity, Ie how much rain before they activate. I could be wrong as I mentioned only had my car for 5 days :D

That clears it up for me a bit too.

Normally jus leave them in INT but sometimes find they are a bit slow to wake up, maybe have the setting on top of the stalk to low.

Is the rear wiper automatic?

Only if you select it to be. The rear wiper tear drop can be turned on and off inside one of the menus from the radio.
