Considering a re-remap.

Featured Replies

Firstly, this thread is not intended to become a mud slinging match between different tuners or their customers, we've had too many of those and I'll report any replies that head that way. So please be sensible.

I've had my Jabba remap for 12months now and am generally very pleased with it. However, I keep reading other people saying how pleased they are with their on-Jabba remaps.

The "issues" I have with the Jabba map are as follows, but I suspect they may exist on all maps;

1) The throttle is very sensitive to a slight lift-off at motorway speeds, if you squeeze the throttle to overtake then lift a little just to steady the speed you feel a little "twitch" as the DV makes a little noise and the excess pressure is lost.

2) On part throttle accleleration the car is a little nervous feeling, like a dog that keeps pulling then easing up on its lead.

3) I cant beat a standard WRX in a drag race (Ok I know that isnt going to be posisble from just a remap)

4) There seems like what can best be described as a dip in power between 3000 and 4000rpm. You cant see anything on dyno plots and it doesnt seem to slow the acceleration, you just hear a slight drop in noise - This could be the VVT coming into play.

5) StuartJ's Jabba map has a torque curve that looks like table mountain, mine is more like everest. I would like more torque next time round (I do realise the transmission/clutch implications)

So, I was considering having a re-remap. This could involve going back to Jabba with my issues for them to work woth (this could be the cheapest option) or maybe going to another tuner.

If I go to another tuner and dont like the new remap could they/Jabba reload my Jabba map?

I've heard good things about Custom code maps and having driven ColD's car it oes feel different. However, We could only just crack 130mph on the airfield where my car will get that easily even without the 60mph entry onto the straight that Col's had (maybe this was the WRC spoiler, estate Vs. hatch aerodynamics or the fat tyres slowing Colin down)

I liek the idea of a switchable map, and also the idea of having Jabba's boost controller fitted.

Constructive comments welcome please.

I won't go into it too much as I'm trying to be mindful of your first paragraph.

Regarding the driveability issues you mention I think this is partly down to your car being mapped on Jabba's old RR and is something they can probably improve upon. However even compared to the well regarded Revo I found Custom-Code amazingly smooth.

I think there may be some mechanical issues with ColD's car but I'm only guessing. Mine will quite easily hit the limiter in top which is over 155 in the 4x4. On the road I've seen off Clio V6 255's, BMW 330's and Impreza STI's among others.

Regarding torque my phase 1 map had a very flat curve where as my phase 2 curve isn't as flat but makes more torque everywhere and peaks at nearly 280ftlb (see the graph in the link in my sig).

If you have any specific questions then feel free to ask either here, by PM or MSN.

i think if it were me i would go back to Jabba with the details you've given above and see what they can do for you.

did you have a custom or generic map the first time?

have the boost controller fitted and the car custom mapped and see how that goes.

obviously to then find you are not happy with that mapping and seek a new one afterwards is going to be more costly then going straight for something new but i think giving Jabba a chance to improve on what you have from them already is the best bet for now.

i would agree with EddyH that perhaps Colins car isnt running totally as he'd like at the moment with him referring to a poorly clutch in another thread.

i've read reports of jabba mapped cars running fine with custom maps and no reports of the above. there are of course other tuners out there that can offer custom maps of very high standards.... as always the choice is down to the individual.

I had a custom map before but diddnt have any specific criteria for them to work from other than "gimme as much oomph as possible". I've since fitted a VRS exhaust but I doubt that will make any real difference.

i doubt the exhaust will have caused the "problems" you've detailed above.

your best bet is to get in touch with Jabba and see what they think.

To maintain diplomacy I wouldn't have any qualms about using any current VAG tuner. I merely keep going back to Jabba as I've done so, so many times before, and never been less that ecstatic every time I've driven away.

Comes down to a trusting a known quantity, and for me Jabba is that. :)

With regards to specific map problems, there's no harm in getting a run done on the new RR which might show up any alterations that could be made. :)

I really should post up my torque/power plots....I guess I will do sometime.

As already suggested I woul =d have a chat with Jabba regarding any issues as they'll happily try and sort them out for you.

I would definitely ring or email Mike (he always tends to be out remapping when you phone :D) - Maybe just telling him the mods you've done since the remap - might explain any odd driving symptoms.

I have always been of the principle that the remap should always follow hardware mods. This is why (if and when ;)) I get hi-flow PD injectors for mine, I shall get back to Jabba a.s.a.p, maybe even ask them to fit them and tweak the map at the same time.

Def talk to Jabba first.

My car was stock engine wise apart from Blue Flame Exhaust, Baily DV & a big front mount & it gave a map you liked.

If you have money to burn it might be better to get a decent free breathing exhaust & the getting Jabba to tweak the map. Mike still has mine on file somewhere but please bear in mind I asked him to wring as much as he could out of it, I also suffered from a bit of lift off overboost but it didnt worry me & I never asked Mike to see if he could smooth it out

I would deffo go back to Jabba and talk to Mike with your list of criteria - the more specific you can be with them the more they will do for you. If you just go in and say give me 'loads of oomph' you will get the run of the mill map ;)

Also - having the boost controller fitted I beleive will allow you to turn things up just a little bit more than a normal map so it's deffo worth having :D

The WRC spoiler is quite bad for top speed and fuel consumption as well btw.

I'm considering a re-map. It's currently standard AFAIK with a 'cleanable' filter. For insurance purposes, absolute maximum power needs to be <215bhp, so I'd be looking for a beefy torque curve to make the most of it.

I assume that there are variations that can be implemented on the basic 'phase 1' re-maps from the major tuners?

As above you would have to specify that you wanted a custom mapping with a max HP figure of 215bhp but a strong torque curve to make the most of the remap.

other than that you would have a generic "off the shelf" remap which any tuner can do for you.

My Octy vRS has a switchable Star Performance remap (not that it's ever been back to standard :D ). I'm very pleased with it - actual figures in sig, but the torque curve is like Table Mountain - if I plant the foot in 3rd when I pass the NSL signs leaving town it's not so much a kick in the back as a big push that just keeps coming (ooer Missus:D ) up to crazy speeds.

Jim at Star now offers a "more aggressive" (his words) remap that can be used with the stock exhaust - and if you change the cat and exhaust he has another

having driven many octys with different maps... the best one had to be my APR ko3 map with v tune.

smooth and powerful.

TBH Goochie there is a long history of 4x4s failing to be a quick as many think they should be... ask ColD... but I would be very inclined to swap the intercooler before doing much else. the std item is woeful.

Was that from awesome? I saw the video of the Briskoda Octy on their site!

which video is that then?

A fun day that..poor old tyres

Hmm is that from the handling day paul?

no no i drive like that all the time.:P

Oh dear. Time to stop thinking that mine should do more than 131mph and 0-62 in under 9.3 seconds. :( But there again mine does have the full interior trim and seats unlike at least one vRS.

i could probably fit more crap in the "boot" of mine....

still you were only best part of 55mph slower ...

A fun day that..poor old tyres

Indeed it was :D
