Running On Low Tyre Pressure...

Featured Replies

Got my RS serviced 3 months ago. There was only 5k on her, but as the car was almost a year old, I got the 10k service done, along with wheel balancing and tracking.

Anyway, being very lazy and busy the last 3 months I only checked the tyre pressure yesterday !! 8k miles up at this stage. I normally run the tyres according to the spec on the inside of the petrol cap. 2.1 for front. And 2.2 for back. All 4 tyres were reading 1.85 to 1.9. They are now at their correct pressure and the car feels all the better for it. I checked for tyre wear and what little there was looked like it was only on either side of the tyre. Also a couple of weeks ago a friend drove behind me and said my wheels looked fine from a balancing point of view. So am I in the clear of could there be some unforseen damage ??

Flanno, those pressures were not low enough for you to need to worry at all. But you do need to check tyre pressure much more often!

I helped my son check his 200SX's tyre pressures yesterday. He had topped them up a couple of days previous in the dark at a garage and wanted to recheck that they were correct. They should be 29psi front and 33psi rear. Three were at 25psi and the rear NS was 10psi! We inflated all the tyres to the correct pressures and I then checked the rear NS for him - there was an embedded nail in the tread and a clearly visible leak. Lucky for him that we spotted it since he carries a large sub in the boot in preference to a spare! :(

I agree with Denis. Tyre pressures should be checked at least every fortnight. Alot of drivers do not pay attention to what is basically your only contact with the road  Buy a foot pump from Halfords and do not rely on garage forecourt jobbies.

Has anyone ever assessed the accuracy of the pressure gauge at garages ?, I always use my own gauge in preference to garage one

I use my own gauge too - one of those nice round dial jobbers with a rubber-protected casing. Available from motor factors for circa

I bought a digital gauge in argos the other day.

And as I suspected, most of those gauges in garages are off.
