Alternator Pulley. .19tdi.

Featured Replies

Hi guys in need of help again. :(

I'm fairly certain the noise I can hear is my alternator pulley.

How do I replace this and is it easier if take the alternator off ?

53 plate Octavia mk1 1.9 tdi.

Thanks for any help.

Yes you have to take the alternator off. You also require a special tool to remove the pulley.

Thanks Tech1e. Doesn't sound too hard and I'm assuming the belt will be easy to take off /on.

Yeah belt is a piece of cake

Ok after some research i see the alternator removal is a big job.

Any way I can replace the pulley with the alternator remaining in place ?

I don't think so, if I remember correctly the alternator pulley points right at the chassis leg doesn't it?

Just checked and yes. Not much room at all. Maybe my Octavia has seen its last days :(

The alternator isn't too hard to remove. It has to come out the top if you aircon.

if the alternator has done a big mileage  a new pulley may be throwing good money after bad

Alternative is a scrapyard alternator. I wouldn't bin the car over it though, mine was noisy @ 110k, I've just passed 140k.... and it's still noisy.

I used to take the two bolts out of the compressor and drop it down with the pipes still connected. Came out the bottom then, no worries about the pas pump and top hose.

On my mkI it was one bracket which held the compressor and alternator.  But the bracket was T shaped, with the T on it's side (the top of the T is bolted to the block), so if you removed the compressor the bracket was still in the way and you couldn't get the alternator past it.

Changed mine on my 90bhp Leon TDi after I first got it.

When I did mine I did remove the power steering pump from the mounting bracket.  But to get to the bolts which hold the pump on you need to remove the pulley.  But you need to loosen the bolts on the pulley before you remove the aux belt or you can't loosen the bolts.  You only need to loosen them a little, then remove the belt.
