Window Help -My widow has fallen into the door!

Featured Replies

Morning all,

jumped into the car this morning and was about to leave for the hospital (was taking my son for a CT Scan) when i pressed the button for the drivers window and the window just dropped into the door. I have managed to get the window up about 66% but it wont come up any further.

I haven't yet removed the door panel but i'm assuming that i'm going to have to do that.

Any help and advice would be appreciated.

thanks i advance.

Your window regulator will have failed.

It's a common problem unfortunately. Repair kits are available for less than £20.

How easy a job it is to DIY depends on whether your car has the door carrier bolted or riveted to the door.

Cars made before early 2004 have bolts, so it's easy to take the carrier off and put it back on again.

Later cars have rivets, and so they need drilling out and then re-riveting back on with the correct size rivets. I've heard of people using rivnuts instead of re-riveting, so you can put a bolt in place.

thanks for that.

It looks like my door panel;s are riveted on!

What a pain in the butt.

Do i have to replace:

the whole door panel?

Motor too?

just the plastic clippy bits?

the two long guides and cables?

or everything?

thanks

thanks Softscoop!

i have been trying to drill out the rivets. Have done about half, and now charging drill.

I have just also seen that it looks like the panel itself is stuck to the door with some form of white sealant.

I've read about the door being leaky and i suspect that the last owner has sealed these.

i've already had to remove the left side door panel and that wasnt pretty. It still hasnt been put back after 3 months as the door dead locked.

The old door panel was a mangled mess. In the process i riveted out the supports for the window.....

I have bought a new one, but havent fitted it as yet because my replacement lock doesnt seem to work correctly. The wiring appears to be slightly different. I have to address this issue then get the door panel back on. Also, someone decided to dent front fender. In order to fix this they have to colour match the door. As there is also a very small dent in the door, i've left the panel off so then can fix it accordingly.

And i've just replaced the entire exhaust from the front all the way to the back.

You can also buy the entire door carrier panel with regulator already assembled. You would have to remove your door speaker and fit it to the new panel. I seem to remember these panels being cheaper though. Maybe they're cashing in on the self-destructing properties of VAG window mechanisms.
