Safely clocking a AMD64 3500+

Featured Replies

I want to clock the AMD 3500 I'll soon be running, to a safe point - maybe not clockng it even close to what it could do. I'll be running 4 extra 80mm CPU fans for extra cooling - any recommendations on best positions to put fans for best circulation?

Would like to perhaps push it by 5% say? Any good programs I can do this on windows with nice big boxes and pretty pictures, so I don't have to numpty my way around the BIOS?

If you are going to clock it I would have a think about water cooling ......I have one running as standard and it gets hot....especially when folding at 100%

You'll do anything to get my 10th spot wont ya LOL

:P  - I think Skodaw is more likely to be up there, than me. :D

It's official my old athlon 700 is a tortoise same WU on my new amd 64 and the old 700 (pure fluke) and even though I am using the amd 64 all the time I think the 700 is going backwards :o

Yeah i have been noticing his rather staggering 24hr points average:eek: Time to get my plans put in place. I aint gonna loose my tenth spot to no one

*must remember the 5 port switch for tomoz ;)

Had the same with my Athlon 750 - Spent 5 days to credit about 40 points.... Given up on it now and actually given the system to someone else now.

I did look into water cooling but its mega bucks from what I can see - Would prefer to just blow loads and loads of air around it.

WHat about overlocking programs though? Need any pointers possible (and ones which have safety margins and are numpty proof :D)

My 3700+ San Diego is running at 2.85GHz with ease, and even when folding 100% of the time, CPU temp is about 45 deg C and that's on near-silent air-cooling :D

Mmmm thanks for that, as i've just been looking at that particular core of AMD64 cpu, for a folding dedicated system myself.....

.... Anything Devon can do... i can do better

All for the team of course :)

AMD64's run nowhere near the temps P4's do

the 3500+ that Jason is getting (got?) would only hit 39 deg C running a 3 hour BF2 session online with the standard athlon cooler.

My current 4000+ runs folding @ 100%, and last night I finished Quake 4 whilst folding and it hit 40 deg C (but that is watercooled)

As mentioned earlier, take it bit by bit, it will easily hit 2.4ghz though as the winchester core is very stable and cool running.

PS, I am in Sunderland today, does anyone have a phrase book I can borrow

Not yet mate. No courier shown up today. No rush. my board/RAM & case are down in an Exeter depot awaiting pick-up after aborted delivery yesterday. :(

edit: Can't put a post without a :finger: at 150HP :P ;):D

it's not all about fans, it's about airflow. sometimes less fans works out better: try it, monitor the temps, and see. fan at front of case sucking in, fan at rear of case blowing out is a good starting point.

you *do* want a good aftermarket CPU heatsink/fan though. watercooling good but expensive - have a look at the midrange thermaltake heatsinks as these are pretty great and cheap.

oh, and 1x120mm fan is better than 2x80mm fans - quieter, too!

Well, I have 4 80mm ones that must be used (otherwise no point me having them) - Question is the best setup for best airflow - Guess airflow wants aiming at the CPU, but not just that - It'll need taking away from the CPU and exiting out somewhere.

Maybe if I chop some 80mm holes in the brand new case and have 2 on each side, 2 blowing in, 2 blowing out. :D

:P Probably something to do with running 10 PC's in work with folding -- only one of them is any good (P4 2.8ghz) the others are various falvours of Celeron with a couple of early P4 1.5Ghz.

Some of them are on 24/7 but most get shut down at night(mores the pity)

But I just heard today that I may be getting another PC at work - the boss want's me to have a lappy -- but I'm trying to go for a AMD64 desktop :D On the basis that it would of course be cheaper for the company

:bump: Was looking through the chipset features on the BIOS on this machine.... It scared me. Anyone care to tell me what I could safely tweak please? I thik I'll run it as standard for a week, then see if I can crank it up.

Its an AMD 3500 running at 2.2ghz. :D Will be doing nothing but folding, maybe just some data backup storage on its HDD.

Jason - If your running a standard AMD cooler(even if its meant for a more powerfull chip) the first thing would be to replace the cooler with a larger cooler - Akasa make some great ones -- the cooler the chip runs the higher your likely to get the clock speed.

You have to remember that you may be limited by your memory -- lower grade memory will not like running at higher frequency's

The main thing is make any changes small ones - change one thing at a time, make a note of what the setting was,so you can return it to that setting, allow the PC to run for a good few hours to see if its stable then tweak again.

Its DDr400 memory, which I think is OK.

What if I were to bolt another 80mm fan on top of the cooler, to blow more air in the same direction at the CPU? Might that help?

Not sure what the changes are I would make either. I remember something about a multiplier a while ago.

It's more the speed of the memory i.e. PC3200 or PC3500 or PC4400 etc.

There is a limit to what a cooler can do - better coolers are made of more conductive material and with a better finish to the contact area to allow better seating to the cpu -- also its worth noting that you would need a thermal grease when doing this - -the sticky pad type stuff on OE coolers isnt as good.

I think the idea is to lower the multiplier and increase the FSB(Front Side Bus) but as I said - you have to do it in stages.
