Struggling to clean the Mrs' car! Advice needed !

Featured Replies

So recently I brought the Mrs a new work car. Its a black Toyota Auris (2016) which came with the "famed" Toyota Protect which is supposed to be a NASA created compound that creates a clear barrier over the paint to keep things protected and effectively make it bead all the time (it's good for that i'll admit).

Problem is with this is that you cant use a jetwash (according to the main dealer), you also cant use wax or polish - so you're left with a basic shampoo without wax.

I've never washed a black car before but I've noticed its a lot different to my silver VRS, by the time I've shampooed one side of the car the previous side has dried which causes streaks everywhere - then to top it off, once I've eventually washed it down and rinsed everything off, I chamois and microfiber to remove all of the excess water (also use a silicon blade for this) but I can never get the car back to a decent finish, no matter what I do there's always some bit that's dried before I can get to it that leaves water streaks everywhere, it looks god awful.

Is there any better practice in going about this or am I missing something??

It's always a bit more difficult in the sun or when it's warm. I find that continuously spraying water over the surface helps so for example i would do one side, rinse it, then do the other side and rinse but also re-rinse the previous side and keep doing it until I've finished the whole car, then just dry with my towel I usually find that does the trick.

Also I would recommend getting a proper drying towel opposed to a chamois and blade, you have a lot more chance of inflicting surface damage such as fine scratches and swirl marks.

Black is great in the showroom....but in real life - an absolute pain.

Exchange for a white one - life's much easier!

And, yes, chamois and blade are making things worse, imo.

Can't exchange now we've done nearly 4000 miles already. What else could I use other than the blade and chamois? I thought they were quite delicate?

A decent drying towel or 2 will see you well.

My recomendations would be the following..

Chemical guys wooly mammoth

Defintive Wax concourse drying towel

Auto Perfection towel

Prestige car care big yellow.

Others have different preferences of course. Also if you have a good budget look into getting a pet dryer to blow as much water away as possible..

They less contact you can have with the paint the better.

Try washing and drying a smaller amount of the car at one time so less time to get streaking or water marks. Use water to dry the car........use the open end of the hosepipe, i.e. no attachments, to 'sheet' the water off each panel - this method in effect dries the car leaving less paintwork to physically dry with a decent drying towel.......or even better use an air blaster or pet drier to blow the water away.  Just search on YouTube for "drying car with water" for plenty of videos of sheeting.

Wash the car & dry as normal

Purchase a quick Detailer Spray - Mist the Panel & wipe this will give you a streak free finish

It's only a ceramic sealant with added bull**** you've been sold just like every new car dealer tries to peddle , so you can treat it as any other , as above bin the chamois and blade and clean your car first thing (8am ) or after 7pm to make life easier for the heat . You could get a water filter that attaches to your hose so if it dries no streaks or spots as the water is pure

I have a metallic black Polo and use a drying cloth followed by AG Rapid Detailer applied with a microfibre polished off with a wooly mammoth polishing cloth.

Leaves the car streak free and glossy. Passers by and neighbours always comment on the cleaniness of our cars.

I am not finding black as bad as thought it maybe to keep clean.

Well shes now taken to sending the car to hand car washes instead...

Not ideal but saves me a job so i can focus on the VRS instead :D!

I have noticed when she takes the car in and they use glass cleaner on the inside of the car - as soon as the sun hits it the next day its as if its covered in grease...any ideas?

I thought it was something to do with this stupid Toyota Protect coating that seems to be on everything from the paintwork to the interior upholstery as when she uses the glass cleaner that came in with the car it doesnt mark up (but its specifically for cars that have had this "Protect" applied) - I queried it with the car was once already and they said they've sacked the guy who was mixing cloths and it wouldnt happen again however its still happening and i'm conscious if he's already put a fix in place to stop the cloths being mixed on what else could be causing it...

Oh dear kiss the nice black finish good bye
