Engine Sound on Cold Start Up

Featured Replies

Not sure which noise you mean, is it the bag of nails sound, ?

you do have a noisy one there.

Is it always without the engine cover. Mine is and does not sound as bad as that, same age as yours. 64,000 miles on it, and 5w 40 oil in.

Standard exhaust, cheap filter fitted.

?

So what have you got there.

Miles done now, mods on it, and oil and plugs in it.?

??
What do you mean by Full Service last year, Oil & Filter change using 5w 30 (vw504 00) & a look see around the car?

Who did this 'Full Service'?

What is the Black Oil Filter you have, an Older OEM one.?

The later VW OEM are Silver. Designed to stop oil coming out as you change them.

(I use Black Mahle Filters rather than the poor VW ones.)

It sounds like a diesel when I start it up :(

yeah changed the spark plugs too although I wish he hadn;t was a ball ache getting my others (NGK) back in again.

Miles 82k, mods are just a powerflow backbox nothing else, blow off valve and that's it for now.  Only been driving with the engine cover off the past few weeks. I think it could be an older OEM one yes.

Best get a decent Oil Filter in and some decent 5w 40 Oil, even Asda 5w 40 Full Synthetic to VW 502 00

& see how it sounds.

So what plugs are in now and at what gap?

Are these new plugs?

What was the issue with those you had fitted and needed to change again?

Okay I'll make a note when it goes in for its service.  I had to top my oil up the other day which was of course 5w 40, but stil making this awful sound.

The plugs that are in now where the ones which I originally put in after I had the mis-fire touble. all I know off by hand are the NGK ones cost about £54 for 4, unsure on gap not come across that before

It kept flashing the EML up when i went to boot it. Had to pull over once and restart it all. Although they did look to be the same plugs...bizarre.

If you can not get someone to identify why it is so noisy then best service it properly and start from a known point.

4 of the correct spark plugs for the car with the correct gap checked and 4 good ignition coils would be a good starting point.

A Software update, and good oil and filter fitted.

(not Castrol Edge 5w 30 Full Synthetic Long LIfe.)  and a tank of 99 ron petrol.

The spark plugs are all correct I know that for a fact, as for the gap i persume they're all okay also as I didn't have any issues before.

Would I have to go to Skoda for a Software Update, if so what price am I likely to be looking at? Nope I've only used 5w 40 for as long as i've put oil in myself.

Presuming the Spark Plug gaps are correct on all 4 spark plugs has been a great cause of failures.

Easy to check, and if you never checked and you do not know the person that fitted them checked, they need checked.

Only using 5w 40 to top up means nothing if 5w 30 went in at the service.

It is basic stuff really.

?

Who services your car & has it never had a Software update that you know of?

Sounds like a timing chain kind of noise to me.

I have a set of barely used coil packs did about 75 miles in them fault finding (was plugs in the end) looking for £50 for the 4
