Is the VRS petrol a good baby/dog wagon?

Featured Replies

I find the ride a complete revelation compared to my previous car.... a SEAT Altea 2.0 TDI Sport.

I find the vRS a lot smoother and also quieter.

On average only 10mpg difference on fuel too compared with the old car

Brilliant for kids (6 & 3 in my case) as lots of room for car seats and boot room superb in estate. Also airbag being off in front is great for one of the kids and means wife has to sit in back [emoji23]

TDI - On a long run (200 miles) I've managed 56mpg, whilst giving it some beans. Shorter runs, including town runs give me around 42-47mpg. Only 2,000 miles in, so hoping that'll get better.

at a fast 70mph ;) I get around the 50MPG in the prius so if 42 is achievable then driving the VRS wouldn't hurt the wallet to much!

I get about 60MPG though on the shorter more congested routes though so the 35mpg might hurt me there though haha

Cheers guys.

So is 40MPG achievable on a long run?

what kinda speed would I need to be doing to get 40MPG?

My best tankful was 37.3mpg (calculated) last week on a 286 mile run from Sussex to North Wales.  It would have been higher, had I not crawled around most of the M25 at near walking pace.

I have got it into the early 40's on normal driving, but only on a relatively clear run.

In my experience it's not so much the speed you need to do, but your driving style that can get you 40mpg.

Gaz

EDIT: And just out of interest, I've just topped up since getting back from Wales.  Very much making progress on the way home and with a heavy right foot, it returned 32.6mpg.  Quite surprised at that as I thought it would be less than my usual htw-wth stop start.  This would have also been better had it not been for the M25 snarl up that's Heathrow to the M23 junction  :dull:

vRS and reliability...

Well, I can rely on my car putting a smile on my four-year old son every time I make the car "growl" as he describes it.

I can also rely on it to need a liter of oil every 7000-odd kilometers, and (apparently) a new turbo and EGR valve every 80k.

The only time it let me down (as in: not starting) was when the battery went dead after an electric malfunction in the dealer-fitted audio system.

As to MPG: I do 15km/liter on average (measures over 50.000 kilometers) but I can see the MPG becoming slightly better (towards 16/17km/liter) now that the engine has a tuning box attached.

My youngest son has had no issues with the ride, having been driven about in my 230 from birth. I have not come close to filling the boot even taking 2 young children away for a week.

Yes on both counts, 3 boys (3-9-12) and two small dogs in the boot with room to spare.  Petrol over Diesel, IMHO, but depends on how far you're driving a year, and DSG over Manual, but I am over 40 and do a lot of town driving :)

can't comment on the ride/handling/mpg of the petrol vrs but I've got a 150 tdi estate, 3 kids (11, 5, 15 months) and a GSD.  recently went to yorkshire.

dog, case and pushchair in boot

also had a medium sized roof box - no dog and everything would have fitted in boot.

I've also fiited a very large pram and two mountain bikes in the boot (wheels and forks off.

so the boot is pretty good.

Samuel (6) sits in the front on his high back booster seat while Lynne (wife), lewis (11) sit in the back with sophie (15 months) in her very large rear facing child seat.

I should answer the OP question too : reliability, no issues in nearly 19,000miles of careful driving ;), on my second set of discs/pads, 3rd set of tyres, few oil changes. Economy around town 25mpg, motorway 33-35mpg and if very gentle 43mpg.

All in all pretty much spot on and very happy with it, would definately have another one.

Only 19000 miles and 3 sets of tyres and 2 sets of pads/discs, cripes don't think thats careful driving

All of it on the track! :-)
