What idling noises does an RS engine make after a drive?

Featured Replies

Folks, I have a RS with 10k kms on it. Car will be coming out of warranty in 3 months (1 year warranty in India). I am a bit concerned about the noises I hear from the engine when its idling after a run (i.e. when its warm). I hear 3 distinct noises when I let the engine idle in my garage :

1. a tik-tik-tik which I know is the charcol canister

2. the "normal" noise that any other engine would make on idling, and

3. a whoopa-whoopa-whoopa kind of noise coming from the front centre.

Its the last one I am worried about. Is this normal? The reason I am worried is because I do not hear the third variety when I start the car in the morning. The car is totally standard and is running smoothly, otherwise.

Thanks for your help.

You've not got a fault with the alarm, by any chance? ;):D

No matter how I try and say "whoopa-whoopa-whoopa" (even with a poor Indian accent impression) I cant make it sound like any noise the engine should be making.

What is the speed of the whoopaing? 2 whoopas per second? 10 whoopas per second.

it almost sounds like a kind of cooling fan type of thing with it being from the front centre... although if your worried have it checked by a dealer.

i must admit though the cooling fans on my vRS dont come on unless the car has been run fairly hard and then left to stand for 5 minutes... the fans cut in and stay on once the engine is off for a few minutes.

the renault i used to have would pop the fans on at any time the car was stationary and at norm temp... so the cooling in the vRS must be pretty good.

Maybe my description, whoopa-whoopa, was not very appropriate. Its more like a pumping noise? I had it checked by the dealer but he claimed he could hear nothing; which is not surprising given the noise in the workshop. Nigel, its not the cooling fan - I recognize that noise. Can anyone on the forum listen to their RS idle in a quiet spot (after a run) and post what they hear?

All sorts of noises but I don't worry about it too much

Air con compressor? Easy to tell if it is; just turn off the AC and see if the noise goes away...
