Featured Replies

Hi guys.I was wondering if someone has installed the Pumpkin android radio from Amazon in his Skoda Rapid. Are they any good and easy to install?

No, not fitted one to my Rapid. However, having looked at the pics on Amazon of it, looks like like the rest of the current crop of cheapo Chinese VW-compatible head units. I fitted an Xtrons PF73MTV to one of our Fabias a few months ago: http://xtrons.co.uk/pf73mtv-7-hd-digital-touch-screen-dual-canbus-gps-navigator-car-dvd-player-with-screen-mirroring-function-for-volkswagen-seat-skoda.html

It was:

1) a pain in the bum to fit (the chunky adapter wiring loom was very difficult to stow out of the way of the actual unit when pushing it back into the hole)

2) the VW canbus reverse engineering was poor (recognised door openings, but the wrong door reported on screen, Maxidot data was way off correct etc)

3) deeply unreliable (had to send it back after 5 weeks for repairs after it started switching itself on while the car was off)

4) got so hot it nearly caught fire (even after repairs it still didn't work properly so was kicked back for a full refund)

Replaced it with a genuine RNS315 Amundsen (same unit I have in my Rapid and that we have in the other Fabia).

My advice, don't waste your money on the Chinese knock-off. Get the real thing. Good quality used RNS315 units can be bought on eBay for about £250. Several of us here have retrofitted them to the Rapid, including me. It's very simple.

Yours was very old unit with old processor (Cortex A7 , 800MHz), resistive  screen (800 x 480), USB stick up to 4GB  and wince 6.0

Maximus asks for an android device...

I've got one Chinese unit in my Toledo and it works perfectly... :D

I stand by my post as still valid. Doesn't matter what OS or processor is being used, these things are low quality, unreliable and a pain in the arse to fit. It's too much extra cabling to try and stash in the Rapid's dash cavity.

Go OE - quality product and available at prices that aren't totally eye-watering.
