'clunk' from pass. side rear drum when setting off

Featured Replies

Hi,

I've noticed for the past week or so, when the car has been parked for a good few hours (especially overnight) the passenger side rear drum will at first inhibit the car from moving until it clunks and frees up and the car can set off freely. I've noticed both my rear drums are very rusty and nasty looking, do they just need changing? I changed the front discs and pads recently and they were pretty much down to the metal, so it would make sense if I needed to change the rear drums. The car was bought used. It has 158,000 miles and I don't think the drums have ever been changed.

Thanks for any advice as to what might solve this issue

Sounds like a sticking shoe in the drums, usually caused by a build up of brake dust mixed with brake fluid. I would be prepared to replace the both wheel cylinders and a set of rear shoes. Also depending on how bad the lip is on the inside of the drums possibly replacing those too.

Yeah, I've seen a set of two drums + brake shoes on ebay for £60 so I may just splash out on them

You will probably need wheel cylinders too.
