Towbar electrics?

Featured Replies

Hi,

I have an 07 octy elegance estate 1.9 tdi, we bought the car new and paid for the towbar as an option. The car arrived minus a towbar, we were told this was normal and they would arrange to have one fitted.

The fitting was done at a local branch of a well known trailer / towbar company and all seemed well for a number of years. After a few years the electrics on my trailer didn't work, narrowed it down to the car and took it back to the fitter who diagnosed that the 'box' was faulty and replaced it. After that things were good for a while but I noticed the occasional blown bulb warning on the dash which would sometimes go off but other times need the brake bulb replacing always the same bulb on the side the towing box is connected, fast forward to last year and my engine ecu blew the only electronic fault logged related to the brake light on the same side as before. I have since taped the scotch locks and disconnected the box.

I now want to tow again and am thinking of a caravan, is it wise to get this wiring removed and a dedicated loom installed? Still annoyed that this wasn't done in the first place but hey ho.

Also the car has 140k on it, clutch and dmf replaced last year etc running great would it cope ok with a caravan??

Thanks and sorry for rambling

You may have corrosion where the scotch locks are attached which is causing a bad voltage reading and showing as a bulb fault. Personally I would have had it soldered and heat shrink covered rather than Scotch locks. I wouldn't imagine the ECU had anything to do with the tow bar electrics. Dedicated electrics wold be ideal but it will be a £100+ outlay for you to get them fitted yourself, double for a professional to do it.

Car shouldn't have any issues towing just make sure your suspension is in good order as your shockers could be worn by now, adding extra weight will make things worse,
