Superb III - Petrol or Diesel

Featured Replies

Hi,

I'm planning to place an order for a new Superb Estate SE L at the weekend and I can't decide which engine to choose... any advice gratefully received.

I currently drive an Octavia III with the 1.4 TSI lump which I love for it's refinement yet somewhat brutal power delivery... however my annual mileage has recently increased from about 7k pa to nearer 20k so I thought I would bite the bullet and go for a diesel. I test drove a Superb with the 150PS 2.0 TDI and whilst it was more flexible than my Octavia pulling well from low revs, it lacked the punch of the TSI unit and was a bit noisier.

I've since read various articles about how diesels may soon be liable for increased road tax (but no one knows by how much or when so this could be just scare stories) so I am now wondering if I should stick to the 1.4 TSI ACT. Performance wise there doesn't appear to be much between them and some back of envelope calculations show that running costs should be broadly similar once the lower purchase price of the petrol is taken into account.

So therefore do I go for the diesel (flexible, relaxed, probably suits the car better and cheaper to run) or the petrol (cheaper to buy, quieter and - based on my Octy - more fun to drive)?

Also does anyone have any experience of the beige Alcantara trim option?. The Mrs has her heart set on a light interior and we can't really run to a L&K but I'm wondering how practical this is with kids.

Many thanks in advance for any thoughts or guidance received.

Dave
