Cylinder head compability for AEE engine between Skoda, Seat and VW

Featured Replies

Hi, this is my first post here so please be kind if this question has been asked before.

I have a Felicia 1.6 -99 with AEE engine and need to replace the cylinder head.

I have noticed that Seat and VW also use AEE engines and wonder if a complete cylinder head from any these will drop fit into old and trusty Felicia?

Maximum compatibility means parts having identical codes.

in your case you have to look for part number 032103265BX.

The same head is used on Octavia 1.6 (1996-2004).

Got my hands on a cylinder head from a VW polo with engine code AEE.

I'ts fitted, and the first testrun worked fine.

Unfortunately there was some small pittings on the mating surface to the thermostate housing, which according to murphys law leaked...

Now i have to try applying some silicone between the head and the thermostate housing.

Btw, Haynes states that the ignition timing shall be checked asap, is this really necessary?

The same distributor is used and i adjusted it according to the old dirtmarks on the distributor.

You're welcome.

How can you tell what has been the ignition timing if you wont check it? You can't really trust only on dirtmarks as checking ignition timing correctly isn't that difficult thing to do..

Btw.. did you perform any timing on cam belt assembly or did you just throw the parts in and tried if the crankshaft turns fully around without hitting the valves..?

Thanks for your replay.

AFAIK, the timing has to be checked with the engine computer set in some kind of special mode, and i don't have the equipment to do it.

Nope, I only did a normal installation of the "new cylinder head" and the existing distributor, incl. replacement of belt and tensioner.

I aligned the crankshaft to the camshaft and adjusted belt tension acc. to procedure, and adjusted the existing distributor using the old dirtmarks.

I did not see any recommendation to adjust the timing after replacing the timing belt, and assumed the angular missmatch on the "new camshaft and head" would be microscopic. I estimate that the adjustment error using the old dirtmarks is less than 0.5 mm, which calculates to a timing mismatch of less than 0,7 deg.

The car started nice and smooth and has been running perfect, i popped a sparkplug out after it had run ~50 km and it looked normal.

Just a word of caution if you're getting one out of a Golf. A lad on another site reported going to get an engine out off a Golf that was an AEE on the logbook, but a tall block 1.6 when he went for the engine.
