Featured Replies

by the day...

BioTechs Office:

2 x P4 2.8Ghz,512Mb DDR - Running client (1 on 24/7) Both set for big WU

3 x P4 2.8Ghz,512Mb DDR - Running console as service (both 24/7) 2 for Big wu

My Office:

1 x P4 2.4Ghz,512Mb DDR - Running client (on 24/7)

***To come soon AMD 64 not fully sure on specs ;) (got to beat devons though lol)

Lab:

1 x P3 1Ghz,256Mb (**** really) but will aid the 24hr points score (24/7) run as service

Just sorted this one just now

Hopefully i shall have the majority of the other P4 systems running console as service very soon (another few early mornings me thinks)

Need more land for Emmerdale LOL

Lee

 I have ask though?

Emmerdale? WTF? :D  Is this just because you give character names to all the workstations? I was wondering that as all our systems are Mr Men characters. We have Mr Messy, Mr Sneeze, Mr Strong... all at this office. Trouble is there all cr4p systems, and we're forbidden from using FAH. :thumbdwn:

Emmerdale Farm maybe? ;):P:rofl:

Chris

Could be - Just was wondering really. Mine can be "Old Mcdonald's" then... although he's just retired and only running a tiny smallholding now. ;)

May aswell keep you updated.....

Another earlier morning getting into work...

1 X P4 2.8Ghz,512Mb DDR -console as service/Big Wu/24/7

1 x P4 2.8Ghz,512Mb DDR -console as service/ 24/7

Both in same office (BioTechs)as most of others ;)

Still a few more to sort yet, then its the PHD office LOL

Finally my 24Hr average is starting to move steadilt upwards

See ya mate. It's like we were racing identical standard cars, but you've just got a big turbo, injectors, FMIC, exhaust and a remap and are disappearing from me!

Lol - what you lot like.........

Here's me just plodding :D

PLodding is good. Galloping is  though. I'm trying to get myself into a gentle trot, and hopefully a slow gentle canter.

The 3700 now powered up J? Hope to be purchasing my bits fromScan soon, looks like i'll be able to get it all set-up for around £250 (i've already had a Sata 80Gig drive kindly given to me by a mate, plus can get a bit o memory from work for nowt ;) )

All the rest out of my fair pocket *sighs

Just added another..

P4 2.8Ghz,512DDR, console as service, 24/7, Big WU

Is it just me , or is it not a bit of a bad idea to use everyone's PCs at work for this kind of thing.

It'll make their systems run like a dog and if I caught anyone here doing this they would be finding a P45 in the post very soon

**am gonna take this as a pop at me - as that is the way it reads to me

For one thing these pc's are very rarely used(IMO far to over spec'd for the application), as the people whom they are assigned too are mainly lab based, for another the Fah core does not make the system run like a dog(as you put it) because i have been running the client version on my (less spec'd) machine for the last 6 months with absolutely no detrement to the work i do(and a lot of it) every day.

HTH,

Lee

Good thing about the folding is it DOES slow itself down as other tasks request CPU usage. I admire this - It does only use spare power only, and IF (and how often does this happen?) 100% of CPU time was asked for by another application, folding would effectively cease. Nothing slows due to folding.

An admirable quality of the program.

It's not a pop at anyone , just a simple statement that this sort of thing is expressly forbidden by most companies tha have any sort of acceptable use policy for their IT equipment , and for very good reasons.

It makes no difference to me if you do it or not , just that there are potential consequences for the equipent and you

Nothing slows due to folding.

I think Goochie had a problem when trying to run his CAD software with the folding client on the same machine as they were both fighting for resources. I've not noticed any problems on my "smallholding" but most of my applications are far less demanding office-type applications. If I'm doing video-editing or photo work, I'll pause the folding client.... :D

Chris

Well, I have noticed a positive thing. Whatever the graphical client was using in terms of resources (probably graphical? :o) the service does not...

I can happily blow things up on Worms2 and not worry about the folding getting in the way. before the graphical client needed shutting down first. Service is a much smoother background way of doing it.

Just a few things to point out:

1. The license agreement specifically forbids installing on machines you do not own/have permission to install the software on. There have been a few instances where a worm-based installer was used to install the client with certain teams/users in them. This is different from a nice install script etc that deploys to a bunch of machines ;) - it's also to protect individuals from say their employers going ape. I had to really batter my IT dept in a previous job to get permission to run it. My personal angle is just use common sense, if you are sharing the machine with others you may want to run it past them, if it's your own, generally no-one gives a t*ss.

2. FAH GUI version can cause problems for OpenGL-based applications and has been known to mess up sometimes with certain Direct-X based stuff too. If you get this problem, switch to the text-only version and go for the service :)

3. There are several cores that can be run by the FAH client. One per client. MOST cores run at Low priority - this means it will get some cpu time every once in a while even if the machine is busy. Older ones run at Idle priority which is IMHO better as it means the core will shut down if anything else needs CPU. In any case, CPU-power wise it's likely to not cause a problem for most applications out there.

4. Although the CPU is not used, memory has been allocated to the core. The amount of memory used is dependent on the core, the WU, and for example the bigWU flag. However - you are using this memory & if you are running say SQL Server + an application on a laptop, you may not want to run the bigWU flag as you'll wanna keep some of that memory spare for caching. Even more so with CAD applications that eat memory anyway.

Just thought I'd add that to the thread, not entirely on topic but hopefully useful to someone :)

Just to add, compatability, as i found after MUCH annoyances.....

Battlefield 2 doesn't run with FAH running.

If you're running the graphical client, I found the same thing. However the service does not affect any gaming.

Might be worth considering a swap as the service setup really is much easier to get on with (after initial setup)
