Fan On Start Up

Featured Replies

Is it normal for the radiator fan to operate just after starting up after the cars been standing for a few hours?

Haven't seen any variation in the normal temp readings.

if air con is on the fans will be on.

How about if the climate control is set to ECON?

so if i turn on the aircon i can test the fans? just wondering because i had a water temp issue this am, see post below, and want to eliminate fans or sensors?

Cheers

Unlikely, Adrian, as the compressor will not be on. No need to force air through the condenser if the system isn't running.

Howard,

that's what I thought although not to such details as you described.;)

When I start my car in the morning, if I rev it, the radiator fan comes on briefly. The climate control is set to ECON.

Like I said not variation in the way the temp gauge works......I suppose I should go to the garage again?

Cheers.

Adrian.

Hmm. I've noticed a couple of strange things with the climate system. If, on a hot summer's day, you get in the car and set the climate to AUTO, there's a rush of air for about 10 seconds, then a noticeable dip in airflow, followed by an even faster rush of air.

What I think is happening is that the climate is, in effect, booting up, and it goes through a series of self-checks before it starts full operation.

If we apply that principle to your scenario, then I wonder if its part of the system self-test to spin up the cooling fans to determine if they are working (possibly a voltage drop or current check)? If they don't appear to be working then I guess it might disable AUTO mode (or at least not allow the compressor to be started).

As long as they go off again shortly afterwards I wouldn't worry too much. :)

Had temp gauge issue a few weeks back - I was mislead by the fans comming on from cold but I tend to have on auto all the time - and garage confirmed as big k has that with air con on the fans run.

Not sure what the garage did but the did sort the temp gauge not reaching normal 90deg after a long run - did not ask for warrenty sig or list on service sheet but alls fine now even in this cold weather.
