VRS230 Start Stop Stopped

Featured Replies

Anyone else had any problems with start-stop?

I noticed at the weekend that mine seems to have packed up, have tried switching off and on again via button near gearstick which shows activated/deactivated but the start stop still does not kick in when stationary. I just get the A with a line through it on the multi dot display.

Plugged in my OBD reader and no fault codes recorded. Looks like a trip to the dealers unless anyone has any bright ideas?

Low voltage on battery?

Does it say why its disabled?

It often tells why in the car-menu on the infotainment.

As above, could be low voltage on the battery...

Are you running heating/cooling/AC hard? This could cause it to disable as well...

Have you only been doing short journeys?

No a/c running and did two 150 mile journeys last week so would be very surprised if it is battery voltage. If I get a chance this morning I'll get my multimeter out and check...

Similar issue with mine.

It seems to work for a while then gradually misbehaves until it is all ok after a run on the motorway. Then the cycle repeats.

If I can get a long period without a motorway run, I'll get it to the dealer when it's not working.

TBH mine may be displaying the same behaviour but as I habitually turn it off as soon as I turn on the ignition, I wouldn't know!

In the Car Menu of the infotainment there is a StopStart Status menu which will tell you why it is not stopping.

Most of the text is very clear e.g. AC needed, battery low, gradient too steep etc

If you run a dashcam overnight or something else constantly plugged into the 12v socket it seems this can cause the battery monitoring system to detect high current draw during shutdown which can disable stop/start. There are several threads from early O3s with this kind of issue.

I've just looked at this and it comes up "function not available".

Any ideas how to turn it on?

I guess it should always be active if the ignition is turned on.

Unless something has changed on recent cars it should always be enabled. I dont know of an option to turn it on or off.

Lucky you! If you find out how to get mine to do that so I don't have to turn it off every time i get in, please let me know...

:D

Sorry guys, I didn't make myself clear.

Stop/start is available but the infotainment option come up as not available.

Ah, so I am not the only person who does this.... :D

Me too, 2,500 miles on the car and the stop/start button is already shiny through use!

The stop / start system is quite a complicated process with a varying number of influences...

Conditions for the automatic engine shut down (stop phase):

  • The gearshift lever is in Neutral.
  • The clutch pedal is not depressed.
  • The driver has fastened the seat belt.
  • The driver's door is closed.
  • The bonnet is closed.
  • The vehicle is at a standstill.
  • The engine is at operating temperature.
  • The charge state of the vehicle battery is sufficient.
  • The stationary vehicle is not on a steep slope or a steep downhill section.
  • The engine speed is less than 1200 1/min.
  • The temperature of the vehicle battery is not too low or too high.
  • There is sufficient pressure in the braking system.
  • The difference between the outdoor- and the set temperature in the interior is not too great.
  • The vehicle speed since the last time the engine was switched off was greater than 3 km/h.
  • The front wheels are not turned excessively (the steering angle is less than 3/4 of a steering wheel revolution).

Conditions for an automatic restart (start phase):

  • The clutch is depressed.
  • The max./min. temperature is set.
  • The Defrost function for the windshield is switched on.
  • A high blower stage has been selected.
  • The START STOP button is pressed.

Conditions for an automatic restart without driver intervention:

  • The vehicle moves at a speed of more than 3 km/h.
  • The difference between the outdoor- and the set temperature in the interior is too great.
  • The charge state of the vehicle battery is not sufficient.
  • There is insufficient pressure in the braking system.

Ah, so I am not the only person who does this.... :D

Most of my journeys where it activates involve rapid stop/start where the benefit to fuel consumption must be negligible and it is more annoying than anything else!

I also have an issue with how aggressively it cuts the engine when I still have forward momentum ( seems I am not the only one ) so prefer just to disable it.

I had start stop in a manual Golf i rented once and it worked much better when linked to the clutch, but in my DSG it is a pain.
