Suspension...

Featured Replies

Was doing the timing belt on my MK1 VRS the other day, and noticed my front right shock absorber is leaking. Checked all the rest and found that my right rear shocker is also ruined.

My plan is to change all four corners at the same time. Not a fan of coilovers as my budget is fairly limited and I'd be wasting my time fitting a cheap set on. I'm not all adverse to just fitting the standard suspension on, as you often find that its the best all rounder, but I fancy the idea of dropping the height a bit when I have the chance, nothing severe, but just for a bit less arch gap.

I know H&K lowering springs are the most recommended, but I've never seen anyone have a great amount of good things to say about putting them on with standard struts. I'm planning on just putting brand new standard struts in as I can't afford both lowering springs and uprated struts at the moment (I also need to do both track rod ends, lower arms and top mounts at the same time), and I have the benefit of being able to get relatively cheap front struts due to trade discount.

I found Vogtland lowering springs on Demon-Tweeks website, lowers both front and rear 35mm (anyone any clue how low this is? everything is completely standard in terms of the wheels) and the make a point in the description of stating they designed this kit to fit with standard struts.

Heres the page - http://www.demon-tweeks.co.uk/performance/lowering-springs/car/skoda/octavia-96-04-vrs/2001/1-8-turbo/vogtland-sport-lowering-springs-lowers-front-35mm-lowers-rear-35mm

Any advice?

Yeah I looked at them but I don't think thats affordable just now, as I've not got any real time to save before doing all this work.

I mean I can get a whole Vogtland kit, springs and shocks, for £250. I'm just wondering if buying just the springs for £90 and putting them on standard shocks (could get them all and th springs for under £250) would be acceptable, or just to spend a little more and get the whole thing. I have a feeling I'd be better buying a whole kit though.

I got front and rear shocks for £160 all in - Bilstein B4

check my posts for details

Standard shocks (which are Bilstein as far as I can tell) do not have enough rebound when lowered from their standard ride height. They're pretty lousy at the best of times (even new) but they're even bouncier and less resistant lower down. In my experience, it's always been buy cheap, buy twice. I have also found that mid-priced coilovers is still a better option than trying to scrimp on shocks and springs.

I've found a full set of Vogtland lowering springs and shocks for £250, which I'll go for, as a mate said the exact same as you about using the standard struts.

Not wanting coilovers.
