Starter motor problem

Wondering if someone here ever had a starter motor problem where the starter keeps running desengaged after the car has started?

 

It stayed running after I disconnected the ignition wire.

 

After shacking the starter heavly I heard a "tick" and it stopped and never happened again since friday.

Anyone here ever changed a starter on a 02T gerabox? How do you remove the upper bolt, do you have to remove the gear selector? I don't see space to remove it since the bolt has like 15 or 20cm :/

 

I think the fabia also uses that gearbox isn't that right? If not sorry for spaming  :x

I haven't  done this job myself, but I'd guess that the bolt only has to be unscrewed by say 2-3cm before the whole starter can be moved, if the lower one is already removed?

thanks for your answer Wino, that bolt is big, you have to remove it fully in order to remove the starter, they are like that on the bottom

I definitely didnt slacken any of the gear selector.

Im pretty sure i moved it around same as changing gear from the inside of the car and that gave enough room to get it passed.

ASZ and a 6 speed here, I'm pretty sure all I did was stuck in gear and eased the selector up slightly with a big flat screwdriver. I'd got next to no tools with me at the time and wasn't well, so wouldn't have done anything massively advanced. 

 

It sounds like your solenoid is a bit gunked up, which is stopping it returning and disengaging properly.

6 speed doesn't have this situation only the 02T wich is 5 speed.

It's stuck but it's strange, because the engine doesn't spin, only the starter, so the starter starts the car, desengages but keeps running, how is that possible? I know I will have to change it but I'm just curious.

but if the solenoid is sticking wouldn't the starert be engaged to the flywheel and also spinning the engine?

The solenoid does two things, it engages the starter motor with the flywheel drive pinion and it physically switches the starter motor on like a relay. It's the relay function that's sticking.

just bought an used one on ebay from germany, will change it when it arrives.

Next saturday I will replace the starter just one more question, any advice on removing the bolts, they seem pretty big are they easy to remove?

Must admit I was a little surprised by this story as all the pre-engaged starters I have seen will pass current at the very end of the solenoid travel, so after the pinion has engaged with flywheel ring gear. For the starter to disengage ring gear, the solenoid must have pulled back so its odd that the high current contact is still passing current. All academic now if you have sourced replacement. I changed one on a SDI last month and used a breaker bar with (18mm ?) socket from above to shift the upper bolt. Came out easily enough after I manouvered gear linkage a bit.

Hi, do yoy know if your gearbox is 02T? You can check that by the starter part number if it starts with 02T.

Sorry, I am currently a long way from the car but I seem to recall the SDI uses an 02T gearbox. I had no trouble withdrawing either bolts, the gear linkage was free to move out of the way. My initial issue was to get enough purchase on the top bolt as I couldnt get a 1/2" socket ratchet in the available space hence use of long breaker which made it really easy.

Replaced, had to remove the selector, not enough space to remove the bolt without doing it.
