Cold to hot

Featured Replies

A question for Mk III diesel owners if I may.

How long, or how many miles, does your car engine take to be fully warmed up from a stone cold start? I appreciate ambient temperature may have a bearing on this.

Winter about three miles. Right now about two...measured on the same journey, 40mph speed limit, some small hills (make the engine work harder and heat up quicker). That's temp guage to 90.

non measured figures, but as an example.. Coolant upto the 90'c mark on the dial in around 3 miles at 30mph.... oil temp is a lot longer - maybe 6 miles at 30mph in uk summer temps

As per RickTT. Coolant warms to mid range quickly and then to 90C within 3-5 miles. Full oil temp takes maybe 6-8 miles as the start of my journeys are mostly downhill!

The following taken from the self study programme for the EA288 engine.

"The thermal management system is used for optimum distribution of the available engine heat while taking into account the heating and cooling demands of the interior, engine and transmission.  The thermal management system heats the engine quickly in the warm-up phase after a cold start. The heat produced by the engine is directed to the components of the cooling system in a targeted manner.  Using the heat available in the cooling system efficiently reduces internal engine friction, which reduces fuel consumption and exhaust emissions.  The interior of the vehicle is also brought up to a comfortable temperature quicker."

The EA288 is clever as it splits the coolant circuit to send the heat from the cylinder head to the heater matrix to achieve a relatively quick cabin warm up time. It can even disengage the water pump to boost warm up times as well. It all sounds terrific until it all goes wrong.... :p

There is also the oft debated electric aux heater in the coolant circuit. Did we ever arrive at a conclusion on that one? My fuse box appears to have the right fuses...

Anyway.... back OT.......My coolant gauge starts moving within the first mile and hits 90ºC in around 3 miles. Much better than all of my previous dervs.
