What does this wire do?

Featured Replies

Dunno, I ain'tgot a clue. Its the only wire coming out the PSU that I'm not sure of its usage, and cannot see anywhere on the board for it to go. :D Tell me its superfluous to requirements!

In case its not clear, its got a blue and black wire going into a tiny three pin plug. :)

Its to connect to the motherboard if youve got a spare fan header.. just allows the fan speed of the psu to be reported in something like MBM.. nothing serious :)

spare fan header? eh?

As another aside my case has a kind of funnel attachment on one removeable side which I guess sits right over the CPU fan when its going. Is this necessary? I'd like to remove it and install an additional 80mm inward blowing fan on that grill, to further boost the airflow heading toward the CPU. Reckon its safe to remove the funnel and wire in a third fan (two on the back were easy, just clipped in - looking for a 4th site now. :D)

edit: BALLCOCKS (you know, in toilet cisterns....) - Just opened my other two fans and it looks like I started to butcher them for use in an ICE install. Any got any of those tiny 3 pin plugs to regular big 4 pin power plug adaptors? :o

aye, if your mobo has a spare connection for it, it allows the mobo to report and control PSU fan speed - ignore it...

 found it. Was a slot on the board called "FAN_CH" or something like that, so plugged it on there. Was designed for 3 wire one, but this only has two - there's a blank space for "+12v" - perhaps because the fan is getting power from another place its plugged in to?

Another quote for my sig!

I think now as two of my 80mm fans are butchered so they won't plug in my PC without the adaptors, I'm going to leave the two on the back, leave the funnel on the case so the Athlon cooling fan drags air specifically from outside instead of blowing "warm" air around from inside the case.

Was tempted to try to double up the two fans on the back, but there's no need I think. Will be looking out for 2 adaptors for these fans at some stage, or just keep them as spares.
