Code reader

Featured Replies

I need to plug in a code reader, I'm told I need to plug it in under the dash drivers side. I've found where I think it is but there's already a yellow box plugged in with nitro OBDZ written on it. Do I just remove it & plug reader in? Thanks

The yellow box (Nitro OBD2) is a so-called chip tuning device that promises a whole lot of good stuff will happen to your engine.

Unplug it to have access to diagnostic socket.

For those who might wonder what does that 'wonder' Nitro OBD2 chip here is a personal short review.

Let's start with the claims from the manufacturer. By the way, the claims apply to any car.

  • up to 30% more power (!)
  • 15% more torque (!!)
  • 15% less fuel (!!!)
  • it will do all the above by reprogramming (wow) the engine computer based on the analysis of driving style after 200 km.

Just by reading these claims, a normal person should smell the BS. But let's say there are people that might think the cars industry keeps us far away from a more powerful, less fuel thirsty engine, all simultaneously. For them I will have to reveal that inside that box there is a microcontroller that flashes 7 LEDs. That's it. The LEDs flash as if there is all kind of data transfer back and forth. There isn't.

Did I tell you the box is made in China? You'll say everything is Chinese today and you'd probably be right. But if you say "it's only 10 quids, no big deal" I will have to disagree. Multiply 10 by 100,000 gullible buyers and you'll have the real picture.

Bottom line is this: stay away from any marketing BS that wrap their lies in fancy, trendy words such as "nitro, eco, max, ultra, 3D, aso". It's a scam, no matter how cheap (chip?) they are.

Ok thanks, I plugged reader in but it was unable to read data

What scanner are you using? What software/version?

If you didn't get any response from the computer of your car, this means your scanner is not compatible. The computer on older cars (Felicia included) understands two communication protocols known as ISO 9141 and ISO 14230 (KWP2000) and they need a specific scanner. The most used is called VAG-COM scanner or VAG-COM cable and it is manufactured by Ross-Tech company. Many Chinese clones are working too.

I've got the airbag light on

And?

  • Author

It hurts my eyes

So use the VAG-COM cable to turn it off.

VAG-COM cable?

Read carefully my previous replies.

Just unplug the air bag ecu power cable 4 pin plug under glove box... will have 3 wires in the four pin plug... Your see a brown link wire leave that plugged in and airbag light will be off.. and no air bag... Your proberly find the fault is with the airbag slip ring in steering wheel.. If you ever past m1 j12 I can read the codes and fix the fault if needed....

I have changed the wheel since ownership, light was on when I bought it

Do you mean the plug go's into the fuse box?

uma1998's solution is to unplug a connector to turn the airbag light off. Of course the airbag itself will be off too. How do you like that?

Ok sounds like you need codes reset from the airbag ecu like I said above if your ever down my way I will read codes.... In uk we need no lights to be on for mot...ricardo if your that **** hot your know that a air bog only has a 10 year span so the chances off one going off in a crash is 50/50 I crashed a felicia at 50mph in the side off a audi and guses what never went off the air bag bit seat belts did so stop trying to be the big I am... Eastfun pm me and I will let you know what to do to disable air bag so no light on dash or pop my way and I will sort it probably codes read fault sorted

I am not at all surprised you crashed your previous car. I am not at all surprised your air "bog" didn't open in that accident. In fact I am surprised you are still alive and free. In the past you explained how you don't care blinding ongoing traffic with illegal HID headlights and (if caught) how you bribe the police for not getting a ticket. You also bragged how you remove other illegal stuff on your car just before MOT to pass it and then you put it back. With such rich portfolio of cheating as main knowledge, do you think you'll get a second chance to cheat death in traffic?

This topic has been all the time about hooking a VAG-COM cable, reading whatever error codes are stored and resetting whatever lights are lit. Despite explaining 4 weeks ago that he needs a VAG-COM cable / scanner / code reader and not a generic OBD scanner, Eastfun still asks "what is a VAG-COM cable?"... To top it all, you jump in and advice him to disable completely the airbag because, isn't so, "it's old and we don't need it to work anyway to pass MOT"... This is just one of many shady advice you gave in this section to cheat MOT instead of doing a proper repair. Yet, amazingly, you are the one that gets angry and curses when you are caught advising dirty business...

If you want to help Eastfun with your VAG-COM to reset the airbag light, do it. But don't advise him to disable the airbag. In case he has an accident you'll have to take responsibility for his injuries or worse. If Eastfun agrees to follow your behaviour, so be it. I tried.

Good to see there's always a difference of opinion and harmony within this section! :x

Each time I've read about a constructive opinion or behaviour based on knowledge, common sense and human values I praised it. But you can't put in the same category proper repairs and cheating repairs and call it "diversity of opinion". Unless a special section is created, called "Confessions of a Shady DIY Mechanic", I will advocate for honest repairs and respect for human lives.
