Anyone use a Safety Camera app on their phone, which one?

Featured Replies

So as the title says, I'm looking for a speed camera (aka Safety Camera) app for my Android. I don't really want a seperate camera although I like the look of the Cheetah CS50, it is not much too look at, a small descreet design and it has some good revews but it is comparably priced to the likes of Road Angel Gem+ etc.

From a bit off Goggling it seems there are not that many phone apps about. The TomTom Camera app for instance and a few others.

I'm testing 'Camera alert' at the moment which is quite nice because it runs in the background and if you have another app, say TorquePro the camera alerts overlay. It can be updated by a subscription to PocketGPSWorld.

I remember seeing on here about uploading camera's via POI's to the Amunsden, I used to do this on a SAT nav I used to have years ago but would this give any alerts let alone the same alerts as a dedicated camera or App (anyone willing to do a video of it in practice)???

The thing that interests me about using a phone is that I can easily remove at the end of the journey and it can double as other things.

I'd rather not leave a device in the car overnight.

I use Road Pilot Mobile on a Microsoft Lumia, app cost me £4 about 3 years ago, no subscription, works well except takes them ages to update database when cameras removed from roadworks on motorway so you get false alerts occasionally but for the cost it works well, you get a screen with GPS speed when no cameras around.

Had sa bit of a look but couldn't find it on Andriod, AARRGGHH.

Going to give TomTom a go for a few days though. Camera Alerts is going to be deleted off my phone though, it's prob not the updating because it does warn me about the database being ou of date but I was sitting still in traffic and the thing kept telling about a speed camera like every second   .

I've got the CameraAlert PocketGPSWorld app and it's fairly good, but I don't like the idea of having to start it every time I get in the car, so I have loaded the POIs into my MIB2 Amundsen It works really well and gives an audible indication when approaching one of the programmed POIs

I added a guide to it here - http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/401902-installing-pocketgps-world-speed-cams-on-amundsen-mib2/?p=4639816

Have a look at Sygic Speed Camera Alert. This gives you four options to use ;HUD, Dashcam, Radar display and Map display. You can also have it 'overlay' other apps.

I don't use it as much as I used to as I tend to use Sygic satnav which gives real time traffic alerts as well as fixed camera positions

I'll have a look more into the Amunsden route I think, thanks  :sun:

Have you tried Waze? Works pretty well for me and, as a bonus, it will soon support Android Auto also ;)

Cyclops or Waze

+1 for Sygic - I use the satnav with camera alerts whenever travelling to different areas of the country, fantastic bit of software

Tried the TomTom Speed Camera app on way home. In a average speed zone it even told me what my Average speed was going to delve in a bit more research with this one.

If I go for a system which uses PocketGPS data I could then use the Amunsden option as well so something to bear in mind.

  • 9 months later...

Had a close shave with a laser speed camera van a couple of months back, was pretty sure I was "under" but would have preferred not to have a few weeks of sweating the NIP. Having read this, I've hard wired in the speed cheetah C550 to keep me "clean". Had it for about a month and it's been fantastic, really small and gives warnings of the normal camera positions as well as safety zones. Removable, easy to store and you can customize it so that it will only alert if you are actually over the local speed limit and there is a camera/safety location, otherwise it just sits there quietly.

Since it's hard wired, it comes on with the ignition so I won't forget to turn it on...

i know now this post is a bit old but glad I spotted it nosing around.
