MKIII VRS TSI drivers getting more than 30Mpg...how do you drive?!

Featured Replies

sounds like a silly question but is there any benefit to driving around in eco mode? has anyone made any notes from driving in all 3 modes? I find normal mode is fine for most occasions, I tried sport mode for the 1st time the other day and the sound generator just annoyed me and somewhat masked any advantage of going faster as that's all that I noticed!

The Soundaktor volume can be reduced or switched of by someone with VCDS, there's a geographical list of such kind folks on this Forum.

I've just had our Golf turned down to 20% & it can't be heard at all.

If you have an "individual" mode on your vRS, then you can choose & save your prefered settings, I've selected "Eco" for the Soundaktor, "Comfort" for the steering & suspension

but left the other settings in "Normal".

As for economy, the R's long-term average is 33 mpg, not as good as the Superbs 37 mpg, but it's still only done 2600 miles so it's not really run-in yet.

We don't have to commute & most of our driving isn't all-day stop-start so I'm happy with our fuel consumption figures.

I'd expect a vRS Octy to be a little better than the Golf, probably a bit lighter & FWD only. SWMBO's old Octy 2 FL DSG was pretty good on fuel after it's re-map, long-term at least 37 mpg, but we weren't "using the performance" all the time, too much slow-moving traffic / speed cameras in this part of the world!

Driving round town does drink petrol, I get between 25-28mpg, longer runs is where I get the higher mpg

This. Went into town at lunchtime today and got around 27mpg. On the way to work (22 miles - 90% motorway) I managed 40mpg with cruise set to 70mph.

It's about the same as what my MK2 FL TSI Manual acheived on the motorway, town appears slightly worse, possibly due to the dsg and it's tendency to hold onto gears sometimes round town?

As mentioned by others, if mpg is a major concern buy the diesel or something else. I'm happy to pay slightly more for the smoothness and power over the diesel.

Totally agree with you, you do pay for having petrol, but it so nice to drive a smooth, refined, powerful engine ! My previous car (seat leon FR) was a diesel, remapped to 190, but the tsi is so much better !

Did my first long trip today, 109 mile trip from one office to another for work. First 25 miles were an hour of stop start (peak traffic 8-9am), followed by 70mph cruise where possible and 50mph cruise for roadwork sections.

Arrived at my destination with the trip computer showing 45.7mpg. Was pretty pleased with this, I think I would have had 2-3mpg more had I not had stop start traffic for the first hour.

So in reference to the OP, it's pretty difficult to obtain less than 30mpg unless you only ever drive it round town, cold.

Today i did Chester to south London.  A51, ok then stuck in a road works temp lights and and accidcnt fot 30 mins, then M6, M1 and straight throught london, edgwre road, brixton and on to crystal palace.  conditions dry, 11C and sunny so high pressure.  maxidot showed 46.something at botom of M1, 45.something by the time i was home, 200 miles after leaving.  i stuck to 70mph on th motorway, 50 in the roadworks, but did blast past 2 or 4 cars on the A roads.  this engine is fairly efficient if driven sensibly. vrs tsi 220, manual.

Long term average over 9k is 41 mpg in my VRS 220 on my 32 mile commute to work. I have seen up to 45 mpg on a steady run. not bad for a petrol estate! I am getting 400-425 miles per tank using Tesco 99 momentum.

Cheers. CornishHermit13.
