Blue smokey diesel on startup, not consuming oil...

Featured Replies

So, I'm aware that if your diesel smokes bad it's not good and various colour smoke means different things but kind of curious about my own car. It's on roughly 150k miles, is an ASV engine code, with a ASZ pd130 turbo, TIP, upgraded intercooler pipework but not get remapped. Heres the thing...

The car has always emitted a small puff of blueish smoke on startup, mainly when cold (weather and engine). However since changing the turbo about 5k miles ago it's been a bit worse. My first thought was uh-oh, turbo seals are gone and oil is getting into the turbo BUT the car does not consume any oil whatsoever. The cambelt is overdue a few months so I imagine the timing isn't great...

Any suggestions what it could be? I'm not all that worried, and I hope no one tells me I should be !

wouldn't worry too much but when was your intercooler etc drained/cleaned last?

Intercooler was changed roughly a year ago. The old one had a little oil in it but not a huge amount. I checked the pipework about 6 months ago and there was a very light film on the inside, but nothing crazy.

I would get the timing belt done and the timing checked with VCDS after as that can cause overfueling and starting issues, also you could have an injector sticking very slightly allowing diesel to drip in overnight possibly. After having the belt and timing checked I would get a 2 cans of Forte diesel injector cleaner or turbo cleaner and put them in on a full tank and see if that helps with the smoking on startup?

Check the glow plugs are working. This helps a lost post starting to aid combustion and stop smoke. My passat did them same when I bought it until I changed them all.

Thanks guys, sounds like a possibility simpsj. I'm planning on getting uprated injectors soon (.240s or .260s if I feel crazy).

SuperbTWM, it happened when it was about 20oC out, so no glow plugs.

Glow plugs almost always come on post starting for the reasons I have stated. Its a piece of cake to test them and they are often forgotten about
