Thrust Bearing - Q

Featured Replies

Hi -Verynew as this is my first post so hoping for some good guidance here !!

Ok the proud owner of a 2012 Superb Est with 39k on the clock - been fully serviced at Skoda every year.

Yesterday noticed a bit of noise when the clutch was IN - press the clutch in and NO noise.

Took the car to a local ind who informed me the Thurst bearing was suspected of being the issue. Would be confirmed when they drop the gearbox and view the bearing.

My car is a keeper as it does exactly what I want in conform, so the question as I understand my car has a dual mass clutch and from checking the web it looks like one can have issues from 4-5 years so do I replace the whole lot or just the thrust bearing - the price to complete the whole job is around £1200 -

I have no issue other an noisy thrust bearing..

So what does every one think ?? replace the thrust bearing only or as the car is a keeper replace the lot??

Will appreciate any thoughts you may have here ..

Kind Regards

Whilst you have the box off you may as well do it all. Cheaper than doing it later and having to pay for labour again.

Thanks - yes minded to do this - just wanted to make sure the logic was correct !!  - is 39k normal?  my reason for asking is I always leave the car in gear when parked up, not sure why I do this but its something I have always done.

Any advice on what the life is of the dual mass clutch ? is 4-5 years about right? the people reading this post should be the best guide ..+ will give me time to save up this time ......!

Like I said I am keeping my car its the best to date, ok slightly dented by this issue but hay it's a great car!!

Regards..

Could be a thrust bearing but could equally be the first motion shaft bearings in the gearbox.

However some are noisier than others and its not always indicative of a fault.

Thanks Tech1e and Nathanio .. - its quite loud when the clutch is out ! they seemed quite sure it was the thrust bearing but I will pass this onto them..

Kind Regards..

Dual mass flywheel failure is much more a function of distance and driving style than age. In my last car (Passat TDI), the DMF made it to 240000 km before it started showing early signs of failure.

If the car has had a lot of urban driving that would shorten the life of the DMF a good bit, but I'd be surprised if it needed changing any time in the next 3-4 years on your car. So the question is whether you want to spend the money on a clutch and DMF now or wait until it's needed in a few years time.

A duff thrust bearing normally gets louder when the clutch is disengaged, as that is when its under load, if the noise is with the pedal up I would say its more likely to be gearbox related

Thanks Chimaera and Superb TWM - all good advice and pointers  - its a difficult choice, pay now or in 3-4 years time?

Minded to replace the lot then I am assured its sorted for sure. The cost should be the extra clutch assembley , where I was informed would be around the £400 mark, so in a way as the gearbox is being taken out then why not go for it now - as prices tend to go up I have found !!

All - my thanks for the feed back will report on what happened later this week which may help someone in the future !!

Kind Regards..

If I had owned the car from new, with that mileage, I would leave the current DMF in and maybe just change the clutch. But in your case I would be tempted to change it as you don't know how its been driven. Its a tough one as I know of 2 cars my dad has had in the past few years that have both had over 150K on the clock and still on original clutch and flywheel.

I'd ask how much the labour for dropping and refitting the gearbox is and make a decision on that basis. That's shared labour no matter what work needs doing in there, but any work after that is going to be an extra cost.

Hi Quick update -

Ok happy to report the car has been fixed -

The problem was not the thrust bearing it was - how do I explain this without a picture (trying for over 1 hour to load a few pictures !!) The metal clutch plate has finger that go to a round hole at the base is metal circle that seems to hold the finger in place - this has snapped and is sticking out so much so it has scored the gearbox cover metal filings all over the place -  been told its ok have pictures which would be nice to show if I could work this system!!

The good news is the Dual Mass flywheel was fine at 39k and the clutch plate was in good condition for 39k apart from metal filings ..

Everything has been replaced as I said its a keeper.

I have also had a good look around the web for advice and the best I have seen is "don't use the gearbox to slow down - use the breaks" this kind of fits with not putting to much strain on the thing so going forward I will do this as I did slow down on the gear box..suppose disk pads are a lot cheaper !!

The next interesting item was related to a Single mass flywheel conversion - The  garage were against this for Skoda - But happy for one to be fitted to a Ford Transit, so will stick with what I have.

I "could" have saved a bit of money by just replacing the Clutch but I am more than happy with the results as I have a 500 mile journey to do this Friday.

Thanks for all the feed back - fyi I have the 138BHP Estate and its a very fine car .. yes it still is!!
