Few questions from new owner

Featured Replies

Delighted with my new Superb. I've had very little time with it yet, but just have a few questions so far:

1. The car has automatically folding wing mirrors. Do I need to worry that if someone folds the mirrors manually, by hand, that it will damage the mechanism?

2. The Apple Carplay functionality is great, but I feel like there's no good spot to stow your phone when it's connected, and the cable is always hanging out into the footwell. Considering how well thought out most other things seem to be, it's strange to me that there's no good place to store your phone (especially a large iPhone 6 Plus) when it's connected. Am I missing something? I would have thought a USB port in the glove box or in the front centre armrest would be better than in front of the gear stick.

3. I have left the wipers on auto so far. When I turn off the ignition while the wipers are going, they simply just stop wherever they are on the windscreen, rather than settling down to the off position. Is that to be expected? My 10-year-old Golf doesn't seem to have this problem. Not a major issue, but it brings out my OCD a bit!

Anyway, like I said, I love the car. It is pretty awesome. Any feedback you can give on my questions would be cool. Also, I will admit to not having read the manual yet, so apologies if I'm asking stuff that's dealt with in there. I will read it as soon as I get the chance.

Thanks!

John

The only one I can answer is point 2, but others will answer 1 and 3 for you soon :)

2/ There is a storage place in front of the gear stick. This has a USB port for using for Android Auto or CarPlay. It can also fit a Nexus 6, so should fit an iPhone 6+ and can be spec'ed with wireless changing (QI wireless so works with most high end Android phones and with iPhone with case adaptors). If you spec it with the wireless charging (phone box I think it is called) then phone reception is increased when the phone is stored here.

Hey, thanks for this. I must look at it more closely when I get home later. I think there's what looks like an ashtray beside the usb port, in my car. It didn't seem like I could fit my phone comfortably anywhere around there, but I will check again later.

Hmmm, that Phone Box option looks good, but pretty sure we don't have that in our car. Anybody know if it's possible to retrofit that option?

Buy a good quality short lightening connector lead and use the USB port. The area for the phone does not need wireless charging for enhanced signal strength.

No 3. Wipers

Same on my Yeti Elegance, i just knock the wipers into the off position when i park....or time switching it off.

Unless I am mistaken you can have Phonebox with wireless charging OR no Phonebox. So I am not sure you can have the enhanced signal strength without wireless charging any more (you used to be able to spec just Phonebox).

I agree wireless charging pointless to some extent as you have to plug in for Android Auto and once you do then you get charging anyway.

I could of course be mistaken as I don't yet have a Superb MkIII just going on the brochure.

MY16 there was no option for wireless charging with the Phonebox, you just got the Phonebox with enhanced signal strength although I cannot confirm or deny if the signal strength is actually enhanced or not ;-)

while wireless charging would be a bonus (i also have a usb charging pad) however as you need to plug the phone in for Android auto it makes it a redundant feature.

Yeah, it's more for the enhanced signal strength, and for the dedicated shelf for the phone. It doesn't sit very well in the ashtray. I've no interest in the wireless charging.

I don't really think it makes much difference as in previous cars my phone has been in arm rests etc and signal is ok.

Maybe check the signal when out side the car and then again when you put the phone say in the armrest and check the bars by pressing the phone menu on the top banner of the screen?

+1 I bought a short (6” IIRC) cable and the phonebook closes completely with it plugged into a iPhone 6+

I too was doubtful at 1st but I am now happy it does improve signal slightly... one lane I go down on the way to and from work I always lost signal through a village (Denton, Kent for anyone interested) this is in several different cars and also my S3 if the phone is on top of the cupholder drawer (where it normally ‘lives’, but if I put it into the phonebook then I can now continue a phone call through Denton.

Retro-fitting the phonebook holder would be easy enough, but connecting it to the aerial may be a bit harder??

Personally I always turn the auto wipers on and off manually, far too many occasions do they wipe a bone dry windscreen!
