DIY Smooth Bumper

Featured Replies

Hi, I am currently trying to smooth my Fabia VRS' front bumper but lack the skill set required it would seem. I feel plastic welding is the best way to go, I've had a go with resins and SMC but once they meet the plastic and get smoothed, hairline cracks appear. For the most part the plastic welding doesn't concern me - it's the 'how to fabricate the plastic that goes in the gap'. It is at two levels but with a channel between them both.

Any help or tips in this regard would be great. Or even if someone isn't prepared to give away their secrets but will consider the work, that'd be great too. ( I live in Nottingham)

Thanks

Anyone?

If you wasn't so far away (I'm from Kent) if happily do it for you. You need too prep the recess so the fibreglass and resin have something too bond too, build up the layers and stop just before the top. Use some smooth bodywork filler for the top coat and make sure you put on enough so it pretrudes the bumper so you can sand it flat. You will have too go along after and fill the little holes and scratches that'll be there from sanding etc. Most of it is learning as you go and the patience. Good luck!

Easiest way is to buy a pre smoothed one, plastics should be thought as oils, ever tried sticking something to oil? Yeah... Other option is to make a mold n make ur own outta fibreglass or carbon fibre if ur feeling posh - or screw it on and filler n wait for the cracks to appear

Cheers for the replies.

SMC got me this far before. I just don't like how heavy it has become, nor do I want to try and create a perfect channel haha.

My fibre glass guy advised not to use fibre glass, primarily for the same reasons that have been said. They won't truly join so risk cracking.
