Help driveshaft cv joint hub nut cross threaded and can't remove

Featured Replies

Anybody had this problem before !! doing work on a fabia 1.4 and went to remove driveshaft retaining nut on the hub and is just spinning as been crosshhreaded by previous repair probably replacing a gator and not replacing with new nut .

Anyway just keeps spinning can't get it out for love nore money tried most things including drilling holes to try to pull it while turning it but still no luck

Anybody had same issue

Is there clearance to get a nut splitter onto it?

Hi not not at all can't even get screwdriver behind because of the lip

Assuming you were able to get it apart, you cannot re-use the cv joint and you may well damage the stub axle assembly in getting them apart.

Suggest you buy a 2nd hand assembly with upright,  etc plus drive shaft and cut your losses.

That is the last resort but never been defeated by a nut before . Don't see how I will damage the cv joint unless I knacker the thread on it .

was thinking of the lip you mentioned.

I got mine off with a sharp chisel. CV joint will be scrap now anyhow. Usually happens when they have been over tightened.

Disconnect inner end of driveshaft, pull (hard) on outer CV behind bearing carrier while unscrewing from the front?

Do you think the thread on the cv joint has gone then and not the nut ? Thought it was designed that the nut is weaker .

Almost certainly the nut, I'd say, but there may be damage to both.

Mine had been over tightened or crossed by an idiot. Took out the thread on the end of the CV so couldn't start a new nut. Luckily I had a spare in the workshop.
