Lorna - you should turn folding OFF of your PC - its not good enough to cope with it...

You wonder why it keeps crashing? :P

But it will only "save" where you are once in a customisable time scale - and when you restart it will go back to the last "save" point... Look in your settings, dare I say it is set to something like 3 hours?

Go to Start - Folding@home - UNINSTALL.

I didn't spend x hours fitting more RAM, a hard drive and a fresh install of windows for you to clutter it up and kill it off with Folding and the like!

For those who don't know - its a AMD1800 and is on its last legs...

amd1800 is a decent cpu isn't it?

amd1800 is a decent cpu isn't it?

I'm Folding on an AMD1800...errm! dual AMD1800's that is

I don't get it. Was running rough and the hard drive died.

So in went a stick of 512 RAM to replace the 128, fresh install of windows, installed firewall, antivirus and the essentials, followed by a good defrag and installed NOTHING else, and it still crashes.

At wits end with it, really am. I fancy a new one - am tempted to give her my "to be" redundant PC. Would look good next to my redundant 17" TFT monitor she already has!

TBH - AMD 1800 really isn't much cop anymore - I'm currently eying up the 4000+ 64 bit - runs at 5.6Ghz on my friends - and thats NOT overclocked!

trouble is lorna is a magnet for any rubbish ...she's the kleptomaniac of the internet and some how every bit of carp, every virus, every trojan will find it's way on to her computer, it has with this one and it did with the last one :o .....last time we did a virus check before christmas there were 60 viruses on it (it has been on auto check since then).

Folding can only use the free processor time so it doesn't matter what speed it is it will only go as quickly as the processor allows, my amd 700 athlon is doing very nicely, slow, but it's chugging along OK, I seem to remember a certain person from Devon had a AMD 750 doing his folding for him and I don't think I am going to catch him up

If you want to see massive resource usage take a look at messenger and messenger plus.....especially with a webcam on all the time as well

Whilst Folding only uses "free" resources, I still find my PC slow to respond and "take" resources from the Folding client. And I have a P4 540 set up with 2GB RAM.

MSN really is a killer though, as is the likes of Norton Internet security. Is MSN Plus necessary Lorna?

And the webcam shouldn't really make any difference, other that to a little bandwidth. But regardless - it stays!

Just found out another reason why her PC had slowed up .....today is the day AVG does a full virus scan on it

i havent got it installed!:P

Just been and checked ....the webcam uses 25% of the cpu

My Athlon 750 is now retired and passed on to a new owner.

Anything > 1G is perfectly fine for FAH speed wise - the 1800+ is plenty fast ;)

Some WUs can take ages.

Crashes could be dodgy memory, overheating CPU, dodgy PSU, allsorts :)

Cant help, but I have had the same thing happen close to completion of a WU. The PC crashed and upon restart the checkpoint was invalid. Maybe 3 mins is to often as it maximises the possibility that if the PC crashes the checkpoint could be corrupted as it maybe writing it at the tim of failure. I would try setting the checkpoint to say 15 mins again and see what happens.

As for not processing and frames, have a look at the cpu utilisation in task manager and make sure its using 100%, if its less chances are the FAH core process has crashed. Restarting the PC should sort that.

Um where's this?

I wish I was in a position to look down on AMD 1800s .... :(
