Lost Keys to Skoda Fabia Hatch

Featured Replies

Hi Folks,

went to blackpool yesterday where somone flicked my wife's backpack which had our car keys. the worst part is both set of keys were in the backpack (original as well as the spare). i usually carry the original with me all the time but went into the beach with my son so had kept the original in the backpack just for an hour or so. speak about bad luck, eh.

i called skoda assistance from blackpool and had the car towed away to the nearest dealership which is at Preston. they told me it will take 7-10 working days for the new key to be cut and coded. once it is there, I will travel to Preston and collect the car (I live in Birmingham :'( )

can someone please advise me the rough cost of replacement keys. i had the key with 3 buttons (lock, unlock, boot) with KEYSS GO (start/stop engine). vehicle spec below.

Hi Shiva I had to buy a replacement key and fob a few years ago for my old Skoda 1.9 estate it cost about £130 then. I was lucky I had a credit card protection policy which covered lost keys so they paid out. Might be worth checking your car insurance or house insurance especially if you are replacing both keys Ring your nearest main dealers spare parts department they should be able to give you a price + you would have to add in the cost of coding the keys to the car Joe

Depending on how you intend to resolve the issue will impact the price differently:

Replacing the 2 lost keys will probably set you back around £150 each for the keys and maybe £100 for programming.

If you were to follow your insurers advice and order a new lock set with replacement keys then it'll end up being £400 for the parts, an hours labour (circa £86) then coding £100.

With new keys paired it will remove the old ones but a would be thief will still be able to access your vehicle via the mechanical door lock cylinder in the drivers door. They wouldn't be able to start the car but they could take your possessions hence your insurance will probably recommend a new lock set.

It's currently a dealer only job and I know of no third party equipment that can successfully pair keys with the latest 2014 onwards MQB platform cars.

I wonder if you can claim travel costs too?

I live in Preston so if there's anything I can do to help, let me know, like a lift from the station (Simpsons Skoda is 3 miles away).

You know, this is why I love this site. Look how everyone tries to help! Brilliant! Shiva, sorry to hear you've got this issue. Good luck and maybe if you can, let us all know how it pans out.

Thank you all for your response. I really appreciate it. This is indeed a great forum.

Rick, Thanks mate. I will most likely travel with my family and make a short holiday out of it when we visit Preston to collect the car. I read that there is a steam railway close to the dealership. Can you recommend any other places worth visiting in Preston?

Update on the issue above:

2 set of keys (lock set and fitting including VAT) is going to set me off £497

Hard lesson learnt is always take lost key cover. My insurer told me that if i had that cover and made a claim it would have not affected my No Claim Bonus

Ta,

Shiva

Hi Shiva, happy to help if you need me.

Here's the link to Ribble Steam Railway. It's a short and slow ride but great for kids.

http://www.ribblesteam.org.uk/

Avenham Park, close to the city centre, and a walk by the River Ribble is nice where you'll find good food at the 'Continental'

http://www.newcontinental.net/

The Harris museum and art gallery is good with a cafe inside

http://www.harrismuseum.org.uk/

Preston covered outdoor market is famous and the main Fishergate area is good for shopping (Park at the Fishergate centre).

If you need anymore recommendations ie restaurants, shops etc let me know.

Sorry to hear about the car woes but hopefully you can put it behind you and enjoy getting on with driving it again.
