Hi all I have a 2010 superb and yesterday was driving it and had a sudden loss of power and then engine cut out! The engine starts but then splutters to a standstill. I had no warning lights and since been checked no fault codes showing. Can anyone please advise. Thank you

Water in the fuel??

Engine type ie CR 170 diesel. Help narrow down.

Thanks Drefaldwyn not recently put fuel in and been running fine til today. How do I check for water?

Is it possible the tank is empty? I promise I'm not being a smart arse - one of my clients had his Octavia do this when the fuel gauge showed just over a quarter full (the fuel gauge turned out to have stuck)...

What diagnostic tool did you use to scan it? Some are more limited than others. VCDS will be more comprehensive than generic OBD scanners.

 

Sudden loss of power followed by cutting out could point to a problem with the HPFP or common rail. IMO if it was a blocked fuel filter you'd have seen a gradual loss of power as it filled up and reduced fuel flow.

 

If there was a lot of water in the fuel, you'd see it in the fuel filter. The fuel filter on a diesel is also a water separator.

 

I'd second RobinK's suggestion to check the fuel tank. Your symptoms are consistent with no fuel. Try and avoid further starting attempts until you've ruled this out - if the fuel system gets airlocked it's a lot of hassle to reprime it on a common rail car.

Does it crank on the starter? At a normal speed? Cambelt?

Hi all this is an update on my skoda superb 11 running problem. Been in my local garage now 3 weeks and problem not found. PDF , injectors and throttle body and number of things checked but can't find problem. Been on top diagnostics ans no fault codes shown. Ready tear my hair out. Can anyone help!!!

If a garage has had the car in person I don't see us having much luck diagnosing over the internet, especially if you don't have the facilities to check things that we suggest yourself.

 

Have they checked the timing, when was the timing belt last changed?

 

they checked out the lift pump, aux. pump and HPFP? or had the fuel filter out just in case the HPFP hasn't shat itself?

 

And technically diesels don't have a throttle body, the butterfly valve in question is an anti shudder valve/part of the EGR system but it can stop it starting if it has failed closed.

Hi update on my problem. The garage as blanked the egr off and car now runs perfectly but trouble is engine management light comes on. Two points. How do I stop the light showing and the other why no fault codes showing at all. Is it illegal to blank egr valve and do I have to notify insurance about the mod.

What your mechanic has done is manually create a blocked EGR fault condition. The ECU is rightly picking this up as a serious malfunction and putting on the warning lamp.

 

20 years ago you could get away with this as the EGR was basically an added on function, and so that add-on could be bypassed or removed. An ECU remap would remove the control parameters from the ECU and a blanking plate would do the rest.

 

Nowadays, EGR is designed into the engine from the start and heavily integrated into the mechanical and electronic systems. Given the highly integrated nature of EGR systems on modern cars I don't know if this is possible or advisable. You will need to speak to a tuner and see what's possible, and what they're willing to do. If you go down this route, you would need to inform your insurer.

 

As to the legality of it, EGR is part of the emissions control system, designed to reduce NOx emissions. Technically, removing it is illegal as it is negatively impacts the emissions performance of the vehicle. Whether it is ever likely to be picked up in practice is another matter.

 

The correct solution here is to replace the EGR module, as that seems to be the culprit for your poor running. By the time you're done with modifying the vehicle to run properly without the EGR in place, it might be close enough on cost that just doing the correct repair is the better option.

EGR cannot just be blanked off, needs mapping out. I suggest you take your car to somebody that knows what they are doing.
