Amundsen (2016) POi's

Featured Replies

I've already posted this in the ICE section but have had no replies and thoughts?

I've just got a new Yeti 2016 and have managed to update the maps OK.  However, I'm stuck getting the POI's to load.  I seem to be able to create then OK via the Skoda portal and save them to a SD card which indicates there is new software when it's inserted into the SD2 port.  I go into Nav and select Settings and Map Memory.  I select update Poi's which is 'live' and it starts the process then gives an error message about the read being interrupted and reboots the Nav system.  I've tried it also on a USB, similar result?

The files I download is a zip file which I've unzipped and end up with four folders I tried all the files, just the POI file. (I've tried this via a MAC and PC - similar results).  I can not find any instruction on how this should be tackled.

Any help advice would be appreciated.

Second small issue is there a way to change the 'male' NAV announcements to a 'female' voice??

Something in the back of my addled brain thinks I saw somewhere someone else with that problem.

Solved by using the VW portal.

@Urrell,  Thanks for the reply I'm using the Skoda portal.  I've done some more work this morning and have found that if I reduced the size of the POI's I can get it to load so maybe there is a MAX limit somewhere.  I'm trying to load the whole UK Speed Camera data base 14+K so I've just tried loading the Gatso cameras 4+K thata's gone in OK so Ill work from there.  I'll post what results I get fro here, thanks again.

Apart from my Garmin (where you can easily change the voice) I've never heard an inbuilt sat nav with a male voice!

Mine's a 2015 car so a pretty late unit and I find the female voice quite pleasant. I don't remember seeing anywhere in the instructions that you can change it.

Though being as the unit is updated via downloads then it would be easy to do if a different voice has been produced.

In my other car its a DVD based system and the female voice is awful, it really grates. No way to change unfortunately.

I bought Billy Connolly for my TomTom but his routine got a bit too repetitive.

I like the London bus lady......not sure if she's available.........voice, I mean.

Thanks for the reply.  Cracked this one a few minutes ago having got very frustrated with still trying to sort out the import of POI's.  Anyway for my car, assume it will be the same for any late Yeti Amundsen two SD card slots, select the MENU button, Select SETTINGS, Select LANGUAGES, at the top of the screen,RH, is a pull down for the voice MALE / FEMALE.  So we have a female voice again as that's what we also prefer.  The male voice sounds slightly frantic when he says 'Please' take the .........  he does sound like a butler so we called 'him' James.  Apologies for any James's' out there.  The female voice on any Sat Nav has always been 'Doris' so long now I can not remember why but my grandson now expects it to be female and I'm sure he'd wonder where 'Doris' had gone.  Yes, I know sad ascribing a personality to a digital Nav system but thats life I guess, well it is in our house.

Glad you sorted it and that's something else learned that's not in the instructions like entering postcodes. Though I won't be changing to the male voice, its just not the same!

You're not alone, in the TT I converse with the sat nav when she gets her knickers in a twist when I ignore her instructions or she goes quiet at a junction or fork in the road - sulking probably!

Thanks, just the POI's to get sorted now!

Where did you get the POI's from? I'd like to give it a try

They are available in a number of places.  For the Speed Cameras I subscribe to PocketGPSworld.  This is very active and the members add to the database most weeks there are updates of changes, the cover, Gatso, Redlight, Mobiles, Specs and pMobiles (mobiles that need a number of reports to confirm it is a regular mobile site so p for provisional.  In all there are well over 15K sites.  They also have a section covering all kinds of other POI's, and like the Speed Cameras they are processed to work in a massive range of manufacturers GPSs.  As I say there are others but this is the site I use, for the Amundsen I download as GPX other.

I've still not worked out why I can not load the whole data base but have got the Gatso cameras up OK.

Thanks for the info. And I take it that you then process the GPX file via the Skoda site into an Amundsen compatible POI. It will give me something to play with when I've an hour or two to spend.

Correct, the documentation is not great and the videos do not show the Yeti Amundsen but the process is similar.  If I manage to get some time to work on it and make any progress I'll post the info.

I've just managed to load a list of the 214 Wainwright fells in the Lake District.  Skoda certainly don't make the process easy, and I work with computers.  After obtaining my GPX file containing the Wainwrights, here's how I converted them to Skoda compatible POIs:-

Go to:- http://mydestination.skoda-auto.com/POIs

> Import a new collection of POI

> Browse to your GPX file - other supported formats include:-
    .ASC (Tom Tom, Igo, Navigon)
    .CSV (ROute66, Garmin, Navman)
    .GPX (Garmin)
    .KML/KMZ (Google Earth)

> Give it a name

> Choose an icon for the POI (I chose a mountain icon I'd earlier downloaded)

> Save the produced Zip file

> Unzip the file and copy the contents to a blank SD card

Then I followed the instructions Ernie first posted.

PS - Before anyone says it; I know I cant actually drive to them, even in a Yeti...  :-)

That's what I tend to do is play around and see what happens.

Like you I seems to able to get one set of POI's loaded but no additional ones.

This is what happens,

I get an initial message when I load the SD card, always the same, "update available"

Then I select the update POI's and get the message.

Available data

Personal POI's 2014-10-30

(that all seems normal and correct)

It then starts, very briefly - split second, to load showing the 100% to 0% line then blanks. Then displays the following message:

The software update was interrupted please reinsert the data medium. The system will be restarted to avoid software errors.

NOTE: I always use the menu, settings, eject SD2 process to eject the card or USB.

At least there are now two of us trying to get this to work, cheers ????

Just trying to think outside the box.

Is there any chance it's trying to store them on the map SD card, would it be worth turning off the write protection on that for a try?

@Urrell, might be worth a try but as two of us have managed to get at least one POI into the system using the Skoda Portal method as PaveyArk has described and as the Portal allows you create and save multi collections I figure that it would probably give the same result as I've already got if it worked. I'd be a bit concerned about tampering with the maps SD as they are probably sensitive to data issues with some kind of check sum. I'll keep your suggestion as a last resort, thanks for making the suggestion. It never seems to be straight forward with Skoda even with the Columbus I had in the old car, I had to use a German VW Portal to get those to work.

My dealer has mailed as a follow up to the recent purchase to check if everything is OK and I did mention the POI issue he has indicated he'll try to help and I've detailed the error message as I've posted above. He has said he'll see if a sub contractor they use for audio installs etc., can throw any light on the subject. Frustrating but that's life I guess, it does keep the little gray cells from sleeping.

Okay, I've now got two sets of POIs loaded...  This is what I did:-

First off, I downloaded a GPX file for all the National Trust sites.  This included a .BMP icon file.

I then went through the same Skoda process detailed previously.  This then showed, on Skoda's site, that I had two sets of POIs.  From there, I saved the file and it said - "Merge and save list of my POIs"

I deleted all the previous data from my SD card and copied the new data onto it after unzipping it.

Then back into the car...... I did:-

> Setup Button

> Manage Memory

> Update my POIs (SD Card)

Once complete @ 100% it very briefly displayed an error.  So fast I couldn't read it.  It happened the first time too.

Then

> Setup Button

> Map

> Select Categories for POI

> Tick Wainwrights and Tick National Trust

Now I have both.  However the icon for National Trust has a problem and I think I'll use one of Skoda's defaults.

Great news. I've tried a similar approach and I get the error message as above. What Map software are you running? I've updated to the latest version 2016/2017. just been re reading the Amundsen manual buts I appear to be doing correctly. I'll give it another go later, thanks for the update.

Can someone confirm, please?

Do any points we want to add need to be in .gpx format?

That seems to be the same as my Garmin and I have the CADW, English Heritage and one of the pub/restaurant chain outlets in that format added to my Garmin.

If it is you can also download all the Network Rail level crossings from Garmin!!

I'm using the latest map software which I updated a few weeks ago.

The actual Amundsen firmware itself is the very early edition which does not display directions in the Maxidot display. My local Skoda dealer seems incapable of upgrading it despite two visits.

The Skoda site accepts files in any of these formats, however I've only tried GPX (Garmin):-

.ASC (Tom Tom, Igo, Navigon)

.CSV (ROute66, Garmin, Navman)

.GPX (Garmin)

.KML/KMZ (Google Earth)

I might have a go, in that case.
