Tyre Flat Spot/Wheel Bearing?

Featured Replies

Looking for a car whisperer please? Essentially on cold start for the first few kms am getting a faint thud and vibration. Coasting in N the noise is definitely coming from the wheel/s but I can't specify which one. Have only done 14K and lately have been only driving 1-2 times a week. Old matey Google informs me this could be tyre flat spots due to less frequent driving and the ambient temp being low (yes it's winter). As the tyre warms the flat spot levels out etc. No play in the wheels and cornering doesn't suggest wheel bearing but i'm no expert.

Has anyone else had a similar complaint? Have never come across tyre flat spots from over a couple of days parking before. Car; TSI RS Wagon (estate). Tyre; Factory Potenzas S001 18". Pressures all good. Thanks. ps. you know if I take to the dealer they won't be able to replicate.

Is the vibration through the chasis, pedals or steering wheel?

Is the vibration through the chasis, pedals or steering wheel?

Predominantly through the steering wheel but I would've said all 3. Cheers 999Pooch

Can be many things, but you need to logically go through the probable causes.

Mainly through the steering wheel vibrations are often through poor wheel balance of uneven tyre wear.

Maybe a weight has fallen off?

I would certainly start at a tyre centre & check balancing, and also look for any flat spots when rotating :)

I had vibration on my last car and was horrified when the tyre technician showed me what was wrong. The tyre had a bulge on the tread face and had worn through to the wires!!!

Get the tyres checked!
